Polyphasic Sleep

Unread postby Kristen » Mon 04 Aug 2008, 21:28:26

I've had imsomnia all of my life. It was always a negative feedback loop. It finially got to the point that I get so worried about falling asleep, I wouldn't be able to. I've had to deal with many years. Then, a few months ago I discovered a theory of a different way of sleeping called polyphasic sleep/ Basically instead of sleeping a full hours, you break your sleep into thirty minutes naps a day at regular intervals. Uusally 6 naps is the minimum. It is suppose to work because if you deprive yourself from sleep for a day, you will enter the REM sleep stage more quickly.

It was really fascinating so I decided to give it a test run. I feel like hell honestly, and I'm only on day two. My body aches and everything is foggy. I also have a ravenous appetite, which makes sense bacause I'm sure the body requires a lot more energy. I guess the first week is hell, but after that it gets more manageable. Wish me luck!

Also... The people on this forum are very bright and intellectual. What consequences am I likely to suffer?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'A')re you a healthy, thin, active person? I ask because I am and I had insomnia all my life. Now I fall asleep like a stone. Know how? I eat before I go to bed. If I wake up in the middle of the night. I eat again (just a little, but sweet--don't forget to brush).

People are animals. When the blood sugar level drops then the genetic program tell us to agitate, sniff around, dig a little, poke under things, lurk, scope. In short, hunt.

Just my two cents :)

(By the way, pot makes me agitate. I think too much to sleep.)

It's not a healthy diet pstarr, but what is healthy anyway ;)
I do it also and my weight just has started growing.

If you have quite a schedule life and not much stress you shouldn't have problems with insomnia. I suffered a bit from that (88 hours without sleep was my record) but then again - diet, schedule life, some sports (jogging) and everything gets back to normal :)
Peak oil is only an indication and a premise of limits to growth on a finite planet.

Tell you what helps me (I eat healthy and stay very active via the bicycle)
.....my routine at night is that I get into bed at 8:30 sleepy or not with a cup of tea...I like sleepy time or mint (non-caf!) and take a few calms forte. After reading for a while I pop my valerian root, 1 or two caps. within the hour I'm zonked until about 5:30. One addition to this routine is that I drink a calcium-magnesium drink before bed...this helps keep me asleep.

This may seem like a lot but it works for me. After I drank for 20 years straight and stopped, I had terrible withdrawals and as I expected, I have some traits connected to being bi-polar. Sleep to me is a huge part in staying clear headed or helping me recover when the noggin is not so clear.

I am very slender, at 5'7, 'm a mere 110 pounds. I do exercise regularly. I live downtown and donated my car to charity last summer so I either walk or cycle to work. I also have a twenty minute workout I do religiously at home. The reason I wanted to try this isn't solely based on my insomnia. Imagine all of the free time you would have if you just took short naps throughout the day. You would have the whole night to accomplish so many different things. I'm working on a short horror novel and this would be perfect.

As far as the mary jane is concerned, pot gives me a boost of energy usually so I try to avoid t if at all possible.

About three hours before bedtime. Right around dusk is best. A small amount, like one or two hits at the most will do.

I knew a surgeon who slept in 15 minute chunks 24 hours a day. Never slept more... course... he was nutz.

The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

If I wake up at one or two in the morning, I don't try to sleep. I close my eyes and watch the patterns behind my eyelids. I don't think or try not to think. If thoughts come I watch them come and go like the patterns behind my eyelids. Relax and enjoy the warmth and comfort of a bed with no expectations of sleep. Think of it not as sleep but as sweet rest in the wee hours.

I also take a supplement high in calcium and magnesium. It helps me sleep better and feel better after I wake up. You should also know that those are the two most abundant and important minerals in the human body.
