I don't despise them at all. I look at them with a heavy powerless feeling in my heart. I feel like helping them, and at the same time there's little or nothing I can do, or that can be done.

Don't feel bad about it. Rejoice, instead. Very hard times are nature's way of getting rid of the fools. Those unprepared folks, drinking and carousing as the ship sinks beneath them, will realize too late that they should have been heading toward the lifeboats the moment the rumors about "an iceberg" were first heard. Let them die. The racial averages for intelligence, wisdom, and foresight will improve greatly. And the survivors can breed up any new quantity of people that might be required. It is well that those survivors will be the better, more alert and smarter, people.
