I saw one of the more interesting movies I've ever seen last night, it's called "The Man From Earth." I'd never heard about it until I heard it mentioned on the Culture of Contact podcast so decided to check it out and I'm glad I did.
It's a movie you'll either love or hate, kind of a science fiction version of "My Dinner With Andre", in that it is all conversation taking place in a living room. It's the topic of the conversation and the reactions that are important.
I don't want to give too much away, but do want to entice people to see it, so the basic premise of the movie is that a college professor quits his job and is in the process of moving away, just before receiving tenure and with a line on the department chairmanship. His friends come to say goodbye and to figure out what is going on with this odd behavior. They grill him about his motivations, he says that he is in the habit of dropping everything and moving every 10 years, and and eventually the conversation goes along these lines, "what would a person be like who was born 14,000 years ago and is still alive?"
He states that it's impossible for him to prove his claim, as anything he says can only be verified from a book, when means he could have found it in a book.
It's a movie about making extraordinary claims and their effect on people. Everyone who has seen a UFO or a ghost, or tried to talk about peak oil to people should appreciate the film. It's emotionally intense and well-written, and if you get a chance to see it by all means do so.
