$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('energycity', 'Y')es, I probably watch it a couple of times a month (if that) usually the news. Last thing I watched though was Nadal vs Federer, Wimbledon 2008.

In the UK those who own/watch a TV have to pay the BBC for the privilege (about £140 or US$280 pa). Call me a masochist if you like but I don't mind paying as I think generally the BBC is a good thing as long as you you read/watch/listen to their output critically.

Good gosh, having to pay almost $300 a year for the "privilege" watching what's really supposed to be free, over-the-air TV...you Brits need to have a TV riot...hehe.

Seriously, though, can't people just lie and say they don't have a TV? Do they really come inside every single home in Britain to see how many TVs you have?

That is one tax I'd be very, very reluctant to pay...just seems horribly unfair to those (like me) who use TVs merely as a DVD monitor. :/

Sorry if I misled - in the UK if you only used your TV set as DVD monitor then you wouldn’t have to pay the BBC anything, you only have to pay if you receive a TV signal. Most people pay up quite peacefully, some get prosecuted for trying to avoid paying, a minority presumably get away with not paying.

It’s an old-fashioned system for paying for public service broadcasting but the last poll I read it had over 75% support; and that’s amazing really as basically it is yet another tax.

The "tax" covers TV, radio and the website (and probably some other things). I’d pay even if it was voluntary, basically because the commercial equivalents are pretty shite and the ads drive me crazy, plus I listen to a BBC radio station (Radio 4) quite a bit and look at the website; and someone's got to pay for it.

Is the BBC biased? Well it gets heavy criticism for being an establishment mouthpiece and also for being full of “lefties” (liberals) and eccentrics. I always try to keep my critical faculties switched on and make up my own mind on a case-by-case basis.

1983: Mikey goes off to grad school, becomes dirt poor.

2008: Mikey still has no TV & loves it.

Whenever I'm somewhere where I can watch one, it's like being assaulted.

What a crass, hideous, empty excuse for culture.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('vision-master', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('anagami', 'I')'ve never bought a TV. There's one in my house, but is not mine. I watch DVDs and dowloaded videos (98% anime, 2% other) in my Mac, but haven't used the TV in a long while. Some dowloaded torrents are 1280x720; much better quality than DVD.

Why watch DVD's with a crappy computer sound system along with a tiny little screen? I don't get it.

Just guessing but maybe because it isn't a big part of his/her life and what they have is sufficient for them?

40" Sony Bravia LCD HD wonder, plus two little conventionals upstairs. Charter cable. There's always something on that's worth watching, although we don't actually watch that much, actually.

everyone who voted 'no', you have to get one to show all your buddies 'the end of suburbia'.

i recenty ordered an antenna, the channelmaster 4228, because i'm on the fringe for receiving philadelphia stations over the air. want to mitigate the effect of high fuel prices on your budget? whack the monthly cable or satellite tv bill.

i'm also considering reducing the monthly phone bill by buying a magicjack (www.magicjack.com)--$40 for the unit, and $20 per year, all the calls you want. however, that thing got mixed reviews based on poor customer support.

Yup. I have two. I don't watch much - haven't watched in a few weeks - but I still want a TV around for major news events and DVDs.

Once things start going downhill, we're going to revert to how things used to be decades ago - one TV functioning in the household. The other will be kept around in storage.

Basically. Why bother with another equally resource-intensive device when one already adequately duplicates its functions, albeit with 20 inches instead of 40? This is one of the reasons we are in this mess. One display screen and one set of speakers is much like another, but for some reason everyone buys two, then expresses concern about the environment and grumbles about the electricity bill.
