Do you own a television?

Unread postby Twilight » Wed 16 Jul 2008, 17:51:53

Inspired by the thread Getting rid of the TV?

Do you own and use a television? To qualify, it must be connected and not stored in the attic or the box propping up the board you use as a coffee table.

Yes, I do. In fact 2 of them in separate rooms (my wife has different taste sometimes :) ). And ~500 channels (cable+satellite) to pick s*it from. And internet content added to that. Yes, I do waste sometimes time watching TV. There are hangovers to live trough. TV helps. My distorted cynical view of the world simply needs sometimes a fresh mainstream material from around the world. Must get another hangover real soon.

I am taking offense to everything I see on there, when I realize they are lying to me to sell me something.
It is like going to the used car lot to get entertainment.

Internet is bad enough 4 people a day trying to make me bigger, that is plain rude also, stuck with email for work.

Didn't grow up with one (I"m 47) and haven't had one in at least 15 or 16 years.

When I do have a chance to see what is on the TV I'm amazed at how
the quality of programming continues to decline. Most programs are simply unwatchable and the ads are repugnant.

Getting my mind used to watching tv would be like getting used to a bad smell in the room.

Yes, I probably watch it a couple of times a month (if that) usually the news. Last thing I watched though was Nadal vs Federer, Wimbledon 2008.

In the UK those who own/watch a TV have to pay the BBC for the privilege (about £140 or US$280 pa). Call me a masochist if you like but I don't mind paying as I think generally the BBC is a good thing as long as you you read/watch/listen to their output critically.

Yep. One TV which my husband and I watch one hour a night during "cuddle time" with the dog. We watch rented movies one night a week, usually Saturday "Pizza Night."

Yes, we have a boring schedule. :)

My husband watches a bit more TV than I do - I usually read, a book every three days or so, depending on the thickness.

I don't have one & haven't had one in five years. My girlfriend's mother (who I'm living with) has two though. How should I vote?

We have 4. One came with the house. Another one, the picture doesn't work and we haven't gotten around to getting rid of it.

I heard that won't work much longer. It's all part of the NWO.

My Mom's disabled from a severe stroke, incapable of speech or reading more than a sentence and barely capable of writing, so TV's about the only source of entertainment she has any more. Other than keeping her company I don't tune it in much at all, but I'm glad it's around for her. There have been a few shows over the years I've enjoyed, but the bulk of it's stultifyingly dull/humorless. Orwell could've written up a Victory Sitcom that wouldn't be much removed from most of this junk...

I have a 42" hdtv I use as a monitor. I haven't had cable tv in at least 10 years and haven't even had an antenna hooked up in 3 or 4. On the rare occasions I watch actual tv programming, it's via the internet or dvd box sets.

I'd love to have BBC and Discovery in HD for the documentaries, but it's not worth paying for a whole high-def cable package.

Up untill last year I never owned a TV, it owned me. So I cut off the cable last summer and now just use it to watch DVDs.

Besides peakoil.com has better comedies and dramas.

I've never bought a TV. There's one in my house, but is not mine. I watch DVDs and dowloaded videos (98% anime, 2% other) in my Mac, but haven't used the TV in a long while. Some dowloaded torrents are 1280x720; much better quality than DVD.

Why watch DVD's with a crappy computer sound system along with a tiny little screen? I don't get it.
