The Joy of Audio Books

Unread postby lper100km » Fri 11 Jul 2008, 13:59:32

I recently discovered that audio books present a whole different aspect to enjoying a novel. There’s nothing like relaxing on the patio, in the shade, listening to a mellifluous voice intelligently interpreting the text. No pages to blow in the breeze. No squinting through sunglasses. Just a portable player and ear buds – and maybe a glass or two! On holiday, the player takes up much less weight and bulk than the physical books - an advantage when travelling these days.

The initiative for these came about as a service to visually impaired people. I’m not visually impaired by any stretch, but found that I enjoy the experience and convenience.

I couldn't agree more. I started listening to audio books while working to kill the monotony.
Now i listen to them in the car, at night, anywhere and everywhere.
I love em and some of the titles available are amazing. Even taught myself some spanish for the holiday last year.

Audio books FTW

I use Text-To-Speech software to "listen" to blogs etc. Great way to stay informed. Will post about this at some point.

For many years I've had the habit of when I go to bed to sleep I put on an audio book with a timer to turn off in 30-40 minutes. It really helps to put me to sleep and I enjoy the books. It does take a while to get through a book that way.

The Terry Pratchett audiobooks are great, incredible reader, and the Douglas Adams books read by him are also really good.

Check out Usenet if you haven't already, there's some good groups.

I agree. Audio books are great! Perfect for travel (bus rides, train rides, etc.).
