Dow Chemical ... blasts Washington for 'true energy crisis'

Unread postby shady28 » Wed 28 May 2008, 14:02:30

"Dow Chemical to raise prices up to 20 percent, blasts Washington for 'true energy crisis'"

...

"Dow said it spent $8 billion on energy and hydrocarbon-based feedstock, or raw materials, in 2002 and that could climb fourfold to $32 billion this year."

CNBC also noted they are not blasting Bush but rather washington as a whole. Many companies/people blame Bush but Dow knows it is all of Washington's fault.

things are happening much too fast for my taste joel. The quality and quantity of PO news keeps increasing and now inflation is finally started in earnest. I am not ready yet.

I think one can never be truly ready for a great disaster - whether that be a natural disaster, or a man-made one.

The mind is the most important weapon. I think you, Pstarr, like I, have the necessary attributes to make it. And, perhaps, even to prosper.

Okay joel I really don't think blame is appropriate here. It is not Wash or Bush's fault. Just oil depletion.

No I agree that supply of oil is the overall issue.

However Dow is blasting Washington because there has not been a sound energy policy in this country ever. Here at peakoil.com we know a lot of this could have been solved by taking energy issues seriously in the 1970s. Dow is telling the rest of the country that is the problem and the fault lies on Washington in the past and now.

The people (Americans) won't direct themselves in the right direction. It will have to acted upon by Washington and Dow is calling them out in hopes Washington will start scrambling to pull something together. I don't think it is in time but it is better to get the ball rolling now rather then when we do see an economic collapse. With a lot of effort they could soften the blow.

Blame Washington.

What funny words.

Any American who blames the "government" for our problems needs to get his or her head checked.

Humans are stupid. We behave stupidly. We elect stupid leaders to properly represent us. When the stupid leaders make stupid decisions we what?

We accuse them of screwing up?

Talk about mass delusion.

Always a scapegoat is needed. It's never us.

Massive Human Dieoff must occur as a result of Peak Oil. Many more than half will die. It will occur everywhere, including where you live. If you fail to recognize this, then your odds of living move toward the "going to die" group.

Why we aren't dumping billions of dollars into a rail system is beyond me.

It seems clear to me that the federal and international governments will not be able to do anything significant at this point. Make your own preparations as best you can.

Time for thinking 'it can't happen to me' is past.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', ' ')We lost it a long time ago.

Thats the problem. We can't change the past and hopefully we as a whole will see we need to make some changes for the future. Huge changes for the future.

However I am not too optimistic.

This shouldn't be a surprise to any of us. Of course the cost of $130 oil was going to be passed along at some point. Get ready for a jump in about everything you buy.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'D')ow is the world's largest producer of plastics, including polystyrene, polyurethanes, polyethylene, polypropylene, and synthetic rubbers. It is also a major producer of the chemicals calcium chloride, ethylene oxide, and various acrylates, surfactants, and cellulose resins. It produces many agricultural chemicals, perhaps being most famous for its pesticide Lorsban.[7] Its most well-known consumer products include Styrofoam brand insulation. Former Dow product lines, Saran wrap, Ziploc bags and Scrubbing Bubbles have been sold to S. C. Johnson & Son.

Somewhat but I am building a new passive solar home and it's not finished yet. I hope the windows and the boiler (for the hydronic heating) are manufactured and delivered before this economy nosedives

I hear you Pstarr. I only just purchased my land this spring and wasn't thinking of building the house until next year. I'm worried I'm a year too late on that account.

That is what cracks me up. Some people here have been studying peak oil and discussing it for years.

Why are they surprised??? And why did they not invest in oil and profit off of the run-up over the last several years???

It makes no sense except for the fact that people don't really believe in peak oil but more or less fantasize about it.
