Hi, Pedro, tell us how things look there.

Everything is connected today, your outlook helps us all.

Jenny we have had a whole pile of new folks lately and lots of the folks posting frequently are pretty new too.

It's not a bad thing in the overall scheme of things to have more folks interested in PO but I've found many people on the internet are somewhat maturity challenged.

Look around and you'll see there are some reasons to put up with the fluff and guff.

:)

I think that you can save the planet and save yourself. The two aren't mutually exclusive. By driving less, changing your lifestyle and using less fossil fuels you are making things better and saving money.

We need to move to a solar economy in my opinion. The sooner the better.

If we all start toward the goal, by doing small things, we are getting somewhere.

I would reccomend a solar backpack or some small way to convert some of that abundant Florida sunshine into useable energy. Maybe a solar cooker could work down there.
Deep in the mud and slime of things, even there, something sings.

Welcome JennyLB82.
You will find many cynics around here. (Including myself on a bad day.)
Occasionally I try to remind people that it is only by doing good things we can hope at all for a good outcome. If we give up and just go with the flow we surely doom ourselves. So great to see a bit of new young positive energy joining us.

New here..

An Irish visitor in the US.......Yes, I am one of those people who saw the AP article...I've been following the US elections and of course the price of gas. You people have NOT seen high priced gas yet..........in Europe we pay about double. I came over here last summer and some people seem to be driving ..er ..em TANKS (sorry big truck drivers) and living in uninsulated houses...........I could go on

So my situation....I have been aware of this peak oil situation for a while, in fact I grew up with no central heating as the 70's crisis kicked in and my dad refused to pay for oil....in the winter we had a huddled existence in front of a stove, with woolly socks and extra jumpers (sweaters....I can knit)- hot water bottles - porridge for breakfast. My dad worked as an engineer with the national power company and saw us move from peat to coal powered stations to oil, then gas. Along the way he turned Christian and saw Armaggeddon coming; we thought he was quite mad (he never wanted to throw out ANYTHING), but somewhere in the back of my mind I know His age and experience counts for something.

My Dads advice: land......good land......I have none myself as it has been too pricey in Ireland. For now I am going to start adjusting my priorities, saving money and learning stuff.....better to be a useful person in a time of crisis.

I know people in Ireland who are moving back to the land, the government is now encouraging conservation, solar, wind and even wave power, though society in general is caught up in driving around trying to catch up with their bills.

nice to meet you.......

Thanks for posting Taizy, welcome.

Don't matter how you got here.

Yea, you folks over there have had higher prices for a while but as I understand fishermen in France and truckers in London are not too happy about current conditions.

It's about what one gets used to and how a big change affects them, right?

Anyway, look around and post up!

Welcome taizy8! From what you describe, you father was much like my mother. And I would agree Americans of the last 40 years at least are spoiled pooches who have no idea what hard times will be like!

I look forward to seeing your input. Ignore the occasional Asshole who responds (and there are several on this site).

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('JennyLB82', 'i') have only been browsing these message board for a couple of days and i have never felt more hopeless in my life. i approached this site with excitement about the forum to discuss these issues with people that actually care about them, and i gotta tell you guys, i have a headache and feel like no matter what i do and no matter how many people i tell it is pointless.

Welcome and don't despair. Right now you are learning just how much more serious the problem is than what you thought. You'll find a new balance after a while.

The destruction of polar bears is tragic. It is produced by global warming which itself is a result of our patterns of energy consumption and of overpopulation. As you know there are many other species being exterminated as we speak, in particular our close relatives the orangutans.

We can help them most by addressing the core issue of energy consumption.

You will find extensive discussion of these and other aspects in the environment section, but you need to be careful with keeping balance since the issues approached there are among the toughest addressed on this site.

The only way to get anything out of this forum is to methodically "ignore" the users that freak you out or piss you off one by one. Then you're left with a whitelist of posters who are actually sane and have some degree of human compassion left.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('JennyLB82', 'o')k people, just because i live in florida doesn't mean i can't have a vested interest in the polar bears. too many people out there don't so someone needs to.

Welcome Jenny. I think it's great that you care about polar bears and the environment. They are as deserving of it as human, maybe more so.
