Trolls are not hope on any horizon, they are trolls. In the future, you should work on your reading comprehension skills and you might be able to discern the actual point of what is written instead of going pissy about a suggestion.

Your condescending attitude is beneath you...or maybe it's that you're starting to freak out as the possibility of the dark things spoken about on this forum start hitting home with fervor?

Or maybe you're posting drunk?

Or maybe you've just decided to become an asshole?

I've held your posts in fairly high regard in the past, but you're starting to show symptoms of the early stages of "Engdahl-ism". [smilie=bduh.gif] You jumped the gun on me and apparently can't acknowledge it. Fine.

For the rest of you, here's my post from another "noob" thread that spawned my post on this thread:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'n')vrpc wrote: That being the case I hope you all enjoy you $6-$7 a gallon at the pump. Enjoy. The sad part is I have to go down with you, but that's okay I am ready for a depression. Bring it on. yes I am all for presidents like we use to have in this country who signed orders to build the highway system, the railroads, hover damn. yeap they were really ditactors weren't they. You people are a joke.

FreedomSlave: If we're such a joke, then be all means, keep surfing for a site that gives you the warm fuzzies.

$6-7/gallon gas will soon be a pleasant memory.
Asswipe.
Do your homework before coming here to insult the many thousands of hours of diligent voluntary efforts by scores of the brightest people humanity has to offer. (bolded here for emphasis)
You obviously have no understanding of politics or economics, much less ecology, biology, physics, or geology. Read a few books, starting with William Catton's "Overshoot", or even Jim Kunstler's "The Long Emergency", so you have some foundation for even touching your keyboard, and then come back to talk...
BTW, this site is not run by the oil companies, so save the evil agenda-type bullshit.

Threadbear, you can coddle trolls if you like. I was merely making a suggestion that might actually help retain legitimate newcomers to this site because I actually believe in the merits of this site, and most of its posters. The more people wake up, the better our chances of dealing with these issues.

btu, apparently that job with CERA didn't pan out, huh? What I said, in that paragraph right above this one...well it sure as hell doesn't apply to you!

FreedomSlave, a word to the wise.

I suggest you cool it on the personal insults.

Example:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('FreedomSlave', 'O')r maybe you're posting drunk?
Or maybe you've just decided to become an asshole?

This thread is starting to look like HOF material. That can be arranged.

Do what you will with it. I made my point.

And what was it I said in my first post in this thread? oh yeah...
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'M')y suggestion to the mods is to move the new noob (as opposed to "newb") threads into the Hall of flames straight away, because that's where they are going to wind up anyway.

I just didn't expect that it would be a mod to light the fire, and not for the type of "flame" that occurred.

Last note - I did have an emoticon there at the end of the quote you used, to indicate I was speaking in jest regarding T-Bears attitude shift, and I thought the use of "Engdahl-ism" would be another give away as to the intended tone. Sorry if it didn't come across that way.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Cashmere', 'I')f you are a Peak Oil newb, then please heed the following . . .
Please DO NOT make your first post a "there is no problem, we have plenty of oil, alternatives are available, there's a big oil conspiracy, some guy heard 30 years ago that there's more oil in Alaska than there are moon rocks on the moon, oil is made at the core of the earth so there's a limitless supply, it's speculation that's driving up the price, we just need to drill more, and so on and on and on."
EVERY ONE of those incorrect assertions has been debated extensively on this site.

Well, except that some of those assertions are correct.

But yes, I would agree that newbies should browse around the site a while before posting a new thread. Chances are there's already a thread about it somewhere. Or several threads.

What does your computer savviness have to do with that? I highly doubt computer skills will have anything to do with growing food in a water scarce environment.

And, no, I dont have any good advice in that regard. Just being fussily precise.

Edit: A more accurate subject would've "How to practice permaculture in a water scarce environment"

Aren't there sticky 'must read first' threads at the top of each forum topic? Although I suppose you can make all the sticky threads you like, some people will still just jump in to say their piece without doing their homework.

NEWB here.
I take no offense to the term, as you said, it is what I am.

I have been researching peak oil for about 4 years now and am a firm believer in the theory. What I don't understand is why it is so hard to convince others in my daily encounters. I have heard every reason imaginable for the cause of rising fuel costs except that we might possibly, maybe, be running out just a little bit.

In the last two days I have been told: it is because of those darn Saudi's, or we have hundreds of oil wells capped off right here that are just waiting to be caressed into giving us all we need as soon as our conspiratory u.s government lets us have it, or it's those "greeny enviromentalists that won't let us drill the billions of barrels out of the ground/water in Anwar and off the eastern coasts, and of course the ever popular " it's the greedy oil companies that are just piling up thier fortunes while they stick it to the little people".

I have quit trying to convince people who don't believe. I am just waiting for reality to set in. When the truth is too ugly to bear most people, it seems just bury thier heads and wait for nanny government to give them their bottles.

Thanks for listening.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 's')ounds like others have a lot to learn too, yes you can run your car on ethanol, I do,

No you don't. You just think you do.

Let me ask you this. If I take 4,000 Joules worth of natural gas and convert it to octane using 2,000 Joules worth of natural gas to yield 5,000 Joules of octane, and then I run my car on the octane . . .

am I . . .
running my car on octane or
running my car on natural gas?

Obviously, I'm running my car on natural gas, in the greater sense.

Ethanol production is the process of turning natural gas and petroleum products into an alcohol.

It is either a net energy loss or very close to break even.

So you are not running your car on ethanol - you are running it on the fossil fuels you are burning to make the ethanol.

If you tell me that you are fermenting your own ethanol in your backyard (don't tell the BATF), then I tell you that the thing you are fermenting was produced with fossil fuels.

If you tell me that you grew your own corn using horses that are fed entirely from food from your property, which is farmed without fossil fuels, then I'd say you are, finally, mostly running your car on ethanol.

But you aren't doing that. Nobody is, because if they were, after about 2 or 3 seasons when they work thousands of hours to produce 10 or 50 gallons of fuel, they'll figure out, "it's just not worth driving."
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'y')ou can run one on hydrogen, its called running on water but its not really, seen that done and am working on it myself

Hydrogen is an energy carrier, like a rechargeable battery. It is not, itself, an energy source.

So if you are "running something on hydrogen", what you really are doing is running that something on whatever fossil fuel was used to "charge" the hydrogen in the first place.

But nice try.
Massive Human Dieoff <b>must</b> occur as a result of Peak Oil. Many more than half will die. It will occur everywhere, including where <b>you</b> live. If you fail to recognize this, then your odds of living move toward the "going to die" group.

Well at least I am relieved that you don't threaten us anymore, the way you did in your glorious first interventions on this forum.
That's progress. :)

You are not getting away with that. I have never "threatened" anyone, and I'll not let you smear my character or credibilty by claiming so.

Put up your evidence right now, or issue a straight up apology.

If it's the ideas that I've discussed that threaten you, then that's your problem and yours alone.

I invite every reader of this site to investigate every word and intention regarding what I've said starting from my very first post right here:

http://www.peakoil.com/post548329.html#548329

or just click my profile and click on "find all posts by".

The only thing even remotely resembling a "threat" was this, in response to ridiculous accusations toward Monte:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')ounds like you have no fear of making libelous statements. Monte's one of the few people on this site who is not anonymous, so maybe you should be a bit more careful in your ad hominem character attacks.

The quote btu attributed from me was from another thread entirely, used completely out of context here, and I can't even find it using the "search" function. It's inappropriate, manipulative, and disingenuous, at the very least. Folks, this means that btu has been trudging through my old posts to try and find something to slam me with. How pathetic...

To once again quote pstarr,

...................../´¯/)
...................,/¯../
................../..../
............/´¯/'...'/´¯¯`·¸
........./'/.../..../......./¨¯\
.......('(...´...´.... ¯~/'...')
........\.................'.../
.........''...\.......... _.·´
...........\..............(
.............\.............\....

btu, you have an opportunity to end this with a simple apology. Do yourself the favor of taking that opportunity, as it is only your credibility that you tarnish with such blatent BS.

Hey TB - I thought you were a mod for some reason. My mistake. Sorry, as the difference mattered - a little bit - in how I thought about responding to you earlier.

FreedomSlave: While I am quite certain you find your posts dreadfully clever, they have yet to demonstrate any real knowledge of Peak Oil, or add anything to the conversation regarding the possible outcomes of a post Peak Oil world.
I am sorry that you have so much time on your hands that you feel it necessary to spend it here attacking other posters.
I would suggest that you either post something relevant to the topic(s) being discussed or find somewhere else to amuse yourself.
