$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('nvrpc', '[')b]A good leader could get the job done if he'd just bypass congress, senate and give the middle finger to the oil companies.

So what you're saying, is that a good leader would simply bypass all of the checks and balances against an unitary authority and assume absolute power?

You define dictators as good leaders? I'd rather take my chances with a democratic system than make another repeat of the historically endlessly attempted "enlightened despot." There will be enough pressure to savage our civil liberties as it is. It will be hard to fight those forces. We certainly don't need to just give it all away willingly. I'm sure there are some desperate people in Burma that would agree.

That would have been a great attitude to have 20-odd years ago. unfortunately we passed right by "hey guys, this is a problem. we should get on that" and are now somewhere in the vicinity of "HOLY S***!!!! HANG ON!!!!"

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('nvrpc', 'T')hat being the case I hope you all enjoy you $6-$7 a gallon at the pump. Enjoy. The sad part is I have to go down with you, but that's okay I am ready for a depression. Bring it on. yes I am all for presidents like we use to have in this country who signed orders to build the highway system, the railroads, hoover dam. yeap they were really dictators weren't they. You people are a joke.

Welcome to the site.

I would caution you on your faith in government to solve problems, especially difficult ones.

There are some coherent arguments against many elements of the case for peak oil, but to make them you will need to study the issue a lot more closely than glibly suggesting that it be turned over to the government for resolution.

If you want to participate in class, you must do your homework.

I understand it's your first day, though, so just have a look around, read up on the subject, let it all sink in, and then go from there.

For now, a friendly suggestion is to refrain from labeling people here a joke.

If we're such a joke, then be all means, keep surfing for a site that gives you the warm fuzzies.

$6-7/gallon gas will soon be a pleasant memory.

Asswipe.

Do your homework before coming here to insult the many thousands of hours of diligent voluntary efforts by scores of the brightest people humanity has to offer.

You obviously have no understanding of politics or economics, much less ecology, biology, physics, or geology. Read a few books, starting with William Catton's "Overshoot", or even Jim Kunstler's "The Long Emergency", so you have some foundation for even touching your keyboard, and then come back to talk...

BTW, this site is not run by the oil companies, so save the evil agenda-type bullshit.

Get off oil? Are you kidding?

We import 60% of our oil today. And contrary to media hype, we only import about 17% from the Middle East. Most of our oil comes from Canada and Mexico. Hardly terrorist nations.

By 2025, we will import 68% of our oil.

The most that renewable energies can do is slow the rate of growth of our dependence upon oil, imported or otherwise.

We will never get off oil until the EROEI to use it is<1

In a scarce oil world, a massive Manhattan style project to construct wind, direct solar, geothermal, ocean or tide energy systems would be new energy consumers until the fossil fuel energy required to build them was paid back and they became net energy producers.

The cost will be huge.

Wind turbine costs are already rising.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he price of offshore turbines rose 48 percent to 2.23 million euros ($3.45 million) per megawatt in the past three years, according to BTM Consult APS, a Danish wind power consultant. By comparison, land-based rotors cost 1.38 million euros per megawatt after rising 74 percent in the same period.

Perhaps we'll have to lower our tolerances some as the site has been exposed to the general public... 8O

No doubt - it's like we've been overrun by a bunch of naked babies all screaming incoherently.

I miss the ol' PeakOil.Com already.

Unfortunately, there are forces at work that are outside the influence of your opinions. I wish that the peak oil problem was as simple as waiting for you to show up and offer your thoughts, but it's not.

If you would like to move on to another website, please feel free.

If you would like to stay at this one, please straighten up.

You will find that this is a reasonably polite crowd if you make the smallest effort.

Wow. You know you're in deep shit when the folks on the other side of the argument are going to offer you the same proof to convince you of the truth of their position as you had intended to give to them.

This is something that has been troubling me lately.

There is a subset of donkey shit eaters who, no matter what the production curve looks like, are never going to accept that oil is running out.

Scary.
