CNN Briefing: Oil

Unread postby jdumars » Mon 19 May 2008, 15:53:47

CNN mentions Peak Oil, Hubbert AND ASPO...
But alas, it ends on the all-too-familiar cornucopian note:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')But surely we'll keep on finding oil to replace depleted stocks?
Well, Brazil and Mexico have found big oil fields in recent years and oil companies are investing heavily in Canadian oil sands in Alberta where it's thought to be plentiful. But like the tar sands of the Orinoco Belt in Venezuela this oil is difficult and expensive to extract, as well as being environmentally controversial.

Professor Aleklett remains pessimistic about increased rates of discovery in the coming years. "If you look at the discovery trends over the past 40 years, we will find 150 billion barrels in the next 30 years. If you are consuming 30 billion barrels every year means that that stock will last five years," he said.

Wait... maybe not.

Doesn't sound all that cornucopian to me.

But surely we'll keep on finding oil to replace depleted stocks?

Sounds more like they are doubting the empty cornucopian promises that were once seen as a given. It is open to question the validity of these claims. It is becoming more and more likely the media is waking up to the biggest story of the millennium. Peak Oil is real and it is here now. New production will not be able to offset declines. A doomerist future knocks at the door but do they have the courage to answer it.

The most important day of the 21st Century has passed, maybe.

Finding anything on CNN besides "Ubama/Hillary is great" is an oil discovery in itself.
People first, then things, then dollars.

Anchorwoman on CNN just lead into oil story with," $4 a gallon is sooo yesterday. Analysts are predicting $6-7 dollar gas."
"Open the gates of hell!" ~Morgan Freeman's character in the movie, Olympus Has Fallen.

"But surely we'll keep on finding oil to replace depleted stocks?"

Surprising that no one brought up the statistic that we are burning 4 barrels for every one that we find, and have been for the last 35 years!

These big numbers must be hard for people to get their heads wrapped around? This whole thing is about as subtle as a pig wearing lipstick!
