Stay tuned for "How to Profit From The Coming Death Camps"...

“If we consider the wealth of big banks, in comparison to the wealth of industrial corporations – or nations for that matter – we find a scenario much like that in a poker parlor. The corporations and nations are the players, and the banks are the house. Players go up and down; some get rich, some go into debt, and some go broke - and they all suffer when economies experience recession or depression. But the house never loses, always takes its share of every pot, always collects its debts – and can change the rules of the game whenever it sees fit.”
~Richard Moore, “Escaping the Matrix”

How to profit from a 'police state'

http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/In ... x?page=all

The booming security business now employs as many as one-fourth of American workers. Here are four companies poised to make a bundle from our penchant for protection.

By Jon Markman
In the midst of a six-year war on terrorism, widening income inequality and a growing fear of immigrants, America has become something of a police state, according to a new study, with as much as 25% of our entire labor force focused on protection rather than production.

The evidence is all around us, from the 47% increase in U.S. workers classified as security guards since 2002 to the sharp advance in the number of men and women under arms in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.

And it's not just public police forces and shopping-mall rent-a-cops. During the raging brush fires in Southern California last month, it was revealed that many wealthy homeowners now hire private firefighters through their insurance companies.

Talk back: Discuss investing with Jon on the SuperModels message board
The study by noted Santa Fe Institute and University of Massachusetts economists Samuel Bowles and Arjun Jayadev, called "Garrison America," suggests that one in four Americans are now engaged in "guard labor," which means they either provide security for people and property or impose work discipline at factories, farms and retailers.

Similar calculations of guard labor for 18 other countries suggest that the United States is pretty much the leader in this category, slightly trailing Greece, a former military dictatorship, but well ahead of Western democracies such as Switzerland, which has just a 10th of its labor force devoted to guard labor.

Nations with the largest percentage of their work forces dedicated to security: Country Security workers as % of labor force
Greece 24%

United States 22.2%

United Kingdom 19.9%
Spain 19.8%
New Zealand 18.3%
Australia 18.2%
Belgium 18.1%
Canada 16.3%
Ireland 15.7%
Netherlands 14.3%

Note: Police personnel are not included due to lack of comparable data.

The increasing focus on protecting the existing economic pie rather than making more pie has important implications going forward, especially as we head into a year in which something like $1 trillion in adjustable-rate-mortgage adjustments will hit low-income and middle-class homeowners like a pie in the face.

You don't need a Ph.D. in behavioral science to realize that a material number of household heads, faced with the loss of their homes and cars to foreclosure and repo men, will turn to theft, drugs and violence amid a sense of frustration with their deteriorating status, just as they have in past periods of economic dislocation.
“A utilitarian civilization will always go on to its logical conclusion – forced labor camps.”

Those percentages of people working in security seem bogus to me.

I suppose if you count each store clerk as a "security" person and each teacher likewise, as both have to deal with controlling the goods or people in their environment.

Outside of that, it would make sense the U.S. is the world leader in security as there are so many guns outstanding and of course, the U.S. wealth is so large. Leaps and bounds above other countries.

Denny is right. There is no way over 1/5 of the workforce is "security"
even the whole government workforce is barely 1/5 of the total.

It's not cool, but we don't like restricting people's free speech. We get enough of that in the real world.

Restricting free speech is a slippery slope. If you restrict his vile anti-semitic rants, you'll probably have to restrict anything that could be construed as racist(which is pretty broad and covers a large number of important topics that need to be talked about).

If you restrict anything that is construed as racist, then it's hard to talk about race differences that effect reality(such as how will different ethnic groups handle the effects of resource depletion, or the possibility for future race conflicts(due to the fracturing of people along ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic lines). Both could be construed as racist. Both, however disturbing, deal with possible realities that could occur due to peak oil. But If there's truth in them, it's good to know about, as the more information we have concerning the future, the better the decisions that can be made on how to avoid potential problems, thus improving the survivability of forum members(which is probably one of the main reasons members come to this board)).

We want to create an atmosphere of anything goes here. We tolerate all sorts of stuff here, from my crazy ideas, to Raphaels(Golem's) totally insane rants about the meaning of various symbols, to Roccman's incredibly angry and threatening post to the upper class.

People like I_Like_Plants, they are free to be racist, but you are free to insult them(curse words and all) or ignore them.

You can pretty much say whatever you want about any member(so long as you don't violate any of your country's laws or the CC(which is extremely loose) in doing so). However, if it's vile and you repeatidly do it then the post and the topic it's in may end up being put in the hall of flames.

No racism isn't cool. The way you handle it is you either mentally ignore what their saying, or if you find you don't want to you just click ignore.

Also, if seeing the racism is causing you severe distress, then you should also click ignore on Jenab6, because he's probably a bigger racist than I_Like_Plants. Pretorian is also pretty racist(as far as it goes to being white supremacist/seperatist and anti-semitic). So you might click -ignore- on those three.

On the other hand/minority side we have Pstarr(not necessarily racist, but when race comes up tends to be more pro-minority(which preference for any race is racism)) and zensui(who has some anger issues about the white man colonizing his people's native land(which doesn't seem racist, just kind of venting anger)).

Other than that everybody else is pretty much either not racist, or at least not vocal about it.

Also many members tend to stand against vocally racism in their post (such as Shannymara, I think PMS, Mos, Aaron just off the top of my head).

As Aaron said (paraphrasing) "We tend to treat racist members of peakoil.com as the retarded cousin at a family reunion. We just try to avoid eye contact and hope they don't talk to us."(I think that's what he said(correct me if I'm wrong Aaron).

Remember just because we have racist members does not mean they are the majority. They are a small minority but they are extremely vocal(probably venting here because they aren't allowed to vent in the real world).

For some reason they make an exception for him. He's like some poor pathetic person who lost all his money and maybe a business or something and has to take it out on someone since he can't accept any blame himself and has IRS trouble. I think he might be hiding from them or something and has to live with almost if not next to nothing. So the board just considers the source.

The mods here go with a less is more philosophy. Which is probably good seeing the broad range of issues that need to be discussed surrounding peak oil. Use the ignore button, is my advice.

BTW, we do actually have a pretty sefl-moderated community here that get's along pretty well. There have been waves of cave dwellers and psychos but they don't stay very long. Trolls are looking for a cheep internet fix for their need to frighten, control and ... If it helps you any to know that alot of government types also frequent this board take that into consideration as well.
I return to you now at the turning of the tide.

One problem with persistent hate speech is that it can gradually legitimize more and more hateful action.

There’s a lot of great stuff on this forum, but the racism REALLY detracts.

When is racism racism?

If a statement can create hateful reactions towards a group of people but is true, is that statement racist?

A vast majority of the big banks (at least the American) are controlled by people with Jewish background.

That of course does not mean that all Jews are bankers.
So just becasue you dislike bankers you don't necessarily dislike all jews.

It is the same thing saying;
Khmer Rouge - think Cambodians.
Yeah, the Pol Pot group were Cambodians, but not all Cambodians were members of Pol Pot. In fact Pol Pot made most of the Cambodians suffer... just like the Zionists (like the international bankers) cause suffering among Jews.
