I was wondering if anyone had the numbers on how much oil is wasted from oil changes ?

Also I was wondering something I heard about the oil from the hemp seed that its the best natural oil could'nt we change to that for general lubrication.

The average american driver drives 12,000 miles per year.
The average american gets an oil change every 3000 miles.
The average oil change uses about 6 quarts of oil.
There are 190,625,023 Licensed drivers in the USA

Simple Math Time.

X = Drivers * (miles / oil changes) * 6

4,575,000,552 Quarts of oil
1,143,750,138 Gallons of oil

or about 74,600 BPD

The average barrel of crude makes 19.5 gallons of (87 octane gas)
Using the above figure. the opportunity cost for using motor oil for your car is 1,454,700 gallons of gas per day. But without the motor oil the car wouldn't go very far, unless you want to provide another lubricant.

Other interesting facts
You can only get about 2.5 quarts of motor oil from 42 gallons of crude.

If you recycle your motor oil though, you can get 2.5 quarts of oil from 1 gallon of used motor oil.

Me thinks me figuring is right on all of the above, but it is midnight. I could have gotten confused without coffee to keep me sane.

Have you ever just changed your oil filter and saw what a difference your oil looks like. I have a car that I have'nt changed the oil in years only the filter and its running just great and the oil looks just fine.
I tell you what listen to the car company change your oil every 3000 miles hell change it every 1500 miles and make sure you use the oil they tell you to use because they need to push that brand for their cut from it.

This would be an useful thread if not for those absurd gallons, quarters, miles, inches, foot, arms and so on...

Tired of converting.

Can't used motor oil be used for something productive? Can it make tires, asphalt, or be burned for heat?

Bloody american education, I don't know the other stuff. So when I do my research and calculations I have to stick with what I know.

Take it up with the US Dept of Education

Not all of it.

Anywho. I was looking at this site, http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/steo/pub/contents.html and I can't figure how they are claiming they know oil prices will finish up down next year.

Garages used to burn it in furnaces for heat. The government banned the sale of the furnaces years ago because they spew tons of heavy metals (wear particles from your engine) into the air.

Drew. not too many years ago, if memory serves me right, a big dealership in Louisville put in a waste oil furnace in 2006. My brother in law is the service writer there.

In another direction, there are plans available for a shop-built centrifuge that takes all the crap out that filters can't get due to small paricle size. A couple trips through this thing and it looks like new. Analysis says it is very close to pure oil. There are some add-on centrifuge type oil cleaners, used in addition to the regular filter, that can be added to cars and trucks, and in the case of some diesel trucks, make the oil good for 50,000 miles I've seen. These were used in large ocean-going ships diesel engines to eliminate oil changes on long voyages, too. I'll try to find some info on it.

These could be put on new cars, but would add to the cost, which of course no mfr. wants to do!

Thanks, Patience! Your memory is a hell of a lot better than mine. I checked the regs up here and those furnaces are indeed legal. They only have minimal restrictions on their use despite the associated heavy metals I mentioned. Don't know where I heard they weren't legal-that was obviously B.S.
