Stephen Leeb was just now on CNN basically saying "If we don't start taking energy seriously, I fear for our future." It was great. Along with the above quote, he felt it necessary to point out:

-To get the rest of the world half way to our level of industrialization, it would take another 200 million bpd and that was not possible.

-Russia has admitted and Saudi Arabia has tacitly admitted that they are both incapable of increasing production to meet global demand.

-Our next "great oil hopes" lie 30,000 feet below the surface

It was fun to watch, right up until he said quote:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')obody has to die.

I swear, it's like trying to get laid after the senior prom, and your date panics just as you're undoing your pants.

Great post. In his defense, he probably said that line so people wouldn't label him a nutcase. It's like when you tell people about peak oil and they listen at first, then when you bring up the topic of a die-off, they look at you like a psycho and stop listening. Sometimes you have to exaggerate to get people to listen.

That's a funny comparison. Thanks for the laugh.

Yes, it's a good quote. It also points to a central issue in the whole peak oil debate. I've noticed this for years. Remember Monte insisting he was not a "doomer" while at the same time posting about ecological overshoot. Ludi kept trying to get him to come clean and spill the beans but he wouldn't do it. That's just one example, there are many others. I figure, well, that's just the facts of psychology. You can only hint at the dire consequences of this situation, but you can't spell it out in black and white. However, there are subtle tricks of communication. For instance, when that guy on CNN said "nobody has to die" what he was actually doing, whether he realized it or not, was admitting to the audience that the thought had indeed crossed his mind and he was sure it would cross his audience's mind too that indeed many will die because of this.

True enough.

I was always found the best way to manipulate people is to provide just enough information to make them think that they came to the conclusion all by themselves. No matter how stupid people actually are, they like to think they are smart. So if you can appeal to their vanity and when they start to mention some of the more negative aspects of what they have concluded from what they have told you, all you need to do is to say "oh wow, ya maybe I guess you might have a point there"

Of course, I tend to fail in this due to my own nature of not being able to keep my mouth shut and I just keep talking and talking until people like I am a nut job.

I don't know, jay, if he was trying to manipulate people. I don't think so. I think he was trying to distance himself from the clear implications of what he was saying. It's too scary. We seem to be witnessing a hesitant recognition, very hesitant, of just how screwed we are. I'll make the prediction here, again, that I've been making for four years: America will go hyper military before this is over.

Do you really think America will go "hyper military" under an Obama administration? I just don't think the neocon approach towards maintaining the status quo is assured. It's just that we've become so burnt out by the bush administration for so long that we think that's the only kind of leadership we'll ever get.

You misunderstand my point, mos, it won't come from the leadership. It will come from the people. Joe sixpack with a bumper sticker that says "Blood For Oil!"

I think that makes a lot of sense. It is weird to see the country pull back from its divided position and see the red necks try to get their minds around electing a Democrat. When the kinder gentler thing begins to fail for them they are very likely to return to their former minds along with a whole lot of liberals that aren't very well rooted in what they like to talk about.
When it comes down to it, the people will always shout, "Free Barabbas." They love Barabbas. He's one of them. He has the same dreams. He does what they wish they could do. That other guy is more removed, more inscrutable. He makes them think. "Crucify him."
