In the tipping point Gladstone talks about how most people are followers, with only a tiny percentage doing anything different from anyone else. This just shows how strong the herd mentality is with most people.

Is it any wonder that people don't believe us about peak oil? They are mostly just looking around at everybody else for clues on how to deal with life. They are too busy buying gigantic pickup trucks that they don't need at all, four wheelers and snowmobiles. Why? Because that's what their friends are doing.

We are at the tipping point. Maybe if we start to do a few things that make sense people will follow. Maybe...

What makes this even scarier is that there are undoubtedly people in power now who are well aware of these studies (and most people's general zombie-like, sadistic nature). With this knowledge it's easy to manipulate any situation to further enhance your own power, and subtly prod the masses in the direction you want them to move in.
