What a day

Unread postby threadbear » Mon 05 May 2008, 15:50:14

I came home, this morning, to the happy chorus of chainsaws, cutting down old growth forest, near my house. Trees that were between 100 and 200 years old. The sound those beautiful healthy trees made as they bit the dust, the splintering shrieks and whines, left me speechless. I feel like making thousands of sturdy baseball bats with the remains of the trees and inviting the owner of the property to run a gauntlet composed of every environmentalist on the island. I'm truly beside myself. I want a mass extinction of humanity. Monte, where are you. I just joined the Die-off crowd.

My neighbor did the same thing last week. Birds are nesting this time of year and I always watch them fly back and forth so I am enjoying this latest oil price spike.

That sucks, threadbear. Any idea who is doing it and/or what for ? Is it development, or harvesting the wood for material or something else ?

Within a minute of the altercation with the loggers, I ran up a steep slope and tore a muscle in my leg. Then I collected the mail, a letter from Revenue Canada, with a HUGE bill. The accountant got something wrong, I guess. Sigh...

I suggested to one of the loggers, that they do what all the other loggers are doing, in B.C. and grow pot. Is that so wrong?

The Dope Rush--Guardian newspaper:

Believe it or not, there are parts of the country where cannabis provides more jobs than logging, mining, oil and gas combined.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('dinopello', 'T')hat sucks, threadbear. Any idea who is doing it and/or what for ? Is it development, or harvesting the wood for material or something else ?

Half acre lot, bordering parkland. The new owner is clear cutting it so he can "open it up" and make it more attractive for resale. People from Alberta think everyone loves a stump farm. They call it "big sky" country.

We have another neighbour down the street who bought a gorgeous little log cabin, tucked in behind old growth, that she decided to butcher. Turns out she's "afraid of the trees" Well hell, go back to the burbs, move to a desert, pave your place over, just make sure, you entomb yourself in the concrete, when you do it.

This is rage talking. My neighbour is a dear woman. But where do people get their aesthetic sense, for one? And what about the wind dynamics when you start altering landscapes in this way? She cuts her trees down, and her other neighbour's trees, end up blowing down.

People do that here too. They clear everything but the oaks, then the oaks get oak wilt and die, and they have a lot full of nothing but dead trees.

Almost speechless!

We All need those trees! If the oceans continue their dieoff, and al the trees are cleared, just what is going to make oxygen and consume the CO2??

Yep. And the really crummy thing, is you have dorks on this forum promoting investing in Brazil, whose main export is soy, grown on the Amazonian jungle land that has been clear cut for agribusiness. God help me, some days I think I'm going to start screaming and not be able to stop. I think many of us feel the same way. God help the earth.

I've got to finish logging my back 1/4 acre because the new neighbour next door went in and mowed down almost 1/4 acre of crown land behind his lot. This of course turned my trees into sails waiting to come down in this falls wind storms.

I'm waiting to get word back from the ministry before updating that thread but my best guess is the the fine will be in the 10's of thousands.

I've never understood Albertan's needs to move in and mow it down. later they complain about the landslides....

I don't understand those Albertans, either - have they never been to Jasper? Hell, maybe they're from the grassy foothills outside Calgary.

I'd never cut those trees down!

You're from Edmonton. YOU'VE got class. You're not a knuckle dragging knucklehead with the faint aroma of oil hanging about you! Funny thing is, some of the people I like and admire the most moved here from Alberta, so it's not a fair generalization. But there is this contingent that just wants to "open it all up".

This is fine with just about everyone, if it's in a scrubby area with young same species trees, tightly packed. Opening up those areas, can actually improve them. But what these dudes cut down was a natural little eco system, a true natural forest, with canopy, mid story, understory, bordering a swampy alder grove....an entirely different story. Scream.

Oh Strider, That's too bad. I hope you can petition the ministry for some of the funds they get from your neighbour.

It's very depressing. As a species, humans are disappointing.

Makes you wonder why some of them don't just go east and south to the plains of Saskatchewan - they wouldn't have to bother cutting anything down!

Anyway, you are due a really, really good day, TBear.
