I suggest we each send the cash to jayraymondson. He'll either sit on it for the next 8 months and or blow it all on something silly during that time and if so I'll just consider it a donation to him. Cool?

In a sad way I wish one of these big box home improvement stores near me would go out of bussiness, when it happenned to K-Mart a few years back I got some real deals on automotive supplies for my car. Perhaps this time around I would be able to pick up some insulation or other useful home improvement items that would help me through the dimmer energy future.

I just got back from a local hardware store. We used to have a great hardware store about 4 blocks from my house but it closed and is now an Irish pub (the yuppification factor). But, the other hardware store is about a mile away and is very good also. It amazes me how they can stock everything you need in such a small space. I am building an outdoor shower and bought the wood at the Home Depot and while I was there looked around for some pipe and couplings and just could not find the exact stuff I needed. A trip to the local hardware store and I had everything. The bolts and pipes are all arranged nicely and if you can't find it they have about 5 people working there that can. Hechingers started out as "The world's most unusual lumber yard". It was a lumber yard that also sold some other stuff. When they morphed into the home improvement super store, it was OK, but when they really are no substitute for a good in-town hardware store.

Lowe's is planning to open new stores all over Canada and Mexico. They have a couple planned for Owen Sound, apparently. Strange, as Ontario is in an official recession and the real estate boom is beginning to slow down country wide, including B.C. These plans are going to take it in the shorts, I think. What is Lowe's marketing plan, and what is their demographic? If they can merge with Home Depot, they will. This is the cannibal stage of capitalism, that ends in monopoly in previously strong, competetive sectors.

Don't think this means much. Let's see where things stand in 10 or 20 years.

I agree. Here's a good example:

Wachovia bank bought out World Savings Bank on May 7, 2006. Look at the date. Wachovia wanted to increase it's exposure to the home mortgage lending business, especially out in California.

Just because a company is increasing it's profile does NOT necessarily make it a good thing.

That's a good point. When stores go out of business, they sell everything-stock And store fixtures like shelving and bins. Years ago, when we lived in Plano [TX], a fabric store went out of business, and I bought one of those large pattern cabinets for $25. Having saved every pattern I ever bought since jr. high, yes, I had no trouble filling the cabinet.
