How can I go about reverting some of my land to...

Unread postby TITAN » Wed 23 Apr 2008, 17:13:53

Its natural condition? I want to transform about 5 acres back into what it was before it got plowed up and used as farm land. The area I live in is the typical dry western sagebrush/grasses/small trees type.

Anyone know of any resources for this type of thing? Should I contact the BLM?

Why not plant an orchard? That way you don't need to tend it as much, and you've got fresh fruit every year.

I already have a 1 acre orchard and a .5 acre garden. I am just looking to reduce my irrigation water usage, and get rid of a little more work around the place so I have more time for other hobbies...

Then find plants that grow great naturally around your area, and begin planting them.

That should cause the land within time to revert to what it would be like if it had never been farmed(minus soil erosion).

Make sure they are plants that will grow without any intervention(wild grasses, what people would call "weeds", maybe some sort of native resilient pestilent bush).

That should fix your land up.

What's the harm in just letting the land grow back to its natural state on its own?

Any money spent hurrying up the process of ecological succession seems like a waste.

You might want to put in some erosion control measures before it gets too overgrown.

We used to do those small retaining wall projects (6-12 inches) in scouting and it can help, especially on paths on inclines.

In some places evasive species will take over before the land can get back to natural. Up here Scottish broom and himalayan blackberries instantly take over disturbed ground far quicker then native plants. So intentional planting is needed if you don't want them.

The BLM will be a good resource but don't let them turn it into a conservation easement because you will never be able to do anything with it.

We see this happen above our mineral interest. We own the minerals, someone else owns the surface, the surface owner turns it into a conservation easement without our permission, we as the mineral owner have no way to access our minerals, and it turns into grounds for a lawsuit and the surface owner must compensate the mineral owner for loss of value in the mineral interest.

all of that to say don't turn it officially into a conservation area.

Some states have restoration organizations which can help you with information or possibly even grants. Try googling your state and "land restoration"

I don't want to get annoying but I want to emphasize that you make sure if you do something like this that you can use the land later on down the road for farming or building.

Our company has seen many surface owners make huge mistakes in turning their property into wetlands or other conservation projects and then wanting to use it as agriculture land or sell it as ag land and they cannot.

Yes, I agree. Make sure you know exactly what you're getting into.

The land is directly adjacent to my home, so I would retain complete control, I would only contact agenices for advice.

I have tried planting sagebrush before, with very little success.

I have given serious thought to 'just leaving it alone' but the problems with invasive species i.e. noxious weeds like kosha (sp*), puncture vine, cheat grass (which isn't really so bad) and thistles, makes it seem like the native species probably won't be able to take hold.

Also, it is somewhat level property, so any kind of modifications/fortifications wouldn't be necessary.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, though. :)
