Withdraw your $4200 cash from bank? "Sorry, we don't have it."

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I') had an interesting time last night at my local Washington Mutual.

I am getting ready to leave on a trip to Las Vegas for a friends wedding so last night I decided that I would actually go into a Washington Mutual branch and withdraw my 'bankroll'. It was about 10 minutes to close but there thankfully no line. I filled out the withdrawal slip for the cash that I wanted, approached the teller, scanned my ATM card, entered my PIN and handed her the slip. She immediately asked if I wanted a check for the amount ($4.2k) and I said no, that I wanted cash. She then yelled to the manager across the bank about the transaction. He asked; how much? She said "$4200". Keep in mind that this was not done in private but across the room at the bank, therefore letting everyone in the room know that I wanted a (fairly) large sum of cash.

It was at this time that the faux hawk sporting manager said 'nope'. He told me (still across the room BTW) that they operated on some automatic withdrawal machines and that he couldn't authorize that much of a withdrawal because other people needed to use it and that the amount of capital wouldn't cover it.

In shock I asked when they (the bank!) would be getting more capital, he said that they got more nightly. So I asked if I could come get the amount I wanted tomorrow. He said 'no' again. Apparently these machines had enough money for me but they didn't want to give it to me because someone else might need it (the bank is open for 10 more minutes).

The manager let me know that I could try a 'traditional' WaMu branch as they have 'more leniencies' with the withdrawal amount. Keep in mind that those are at least 3 miles (over 30 minutes in San Francisco) away.

I then asked the teller very plainly... "Are you saying that I can't have MY money?"

She said "yes".

Beyond mad I ripped up my withdrawal slip and left the bank. I have two out standing checks (IRS and State) with WaMu, when they clear I am OUT. I can't think of anything more ridiculous than not being able to get my money. Aren't there some rules about that?

I guess that the good thing to come of all this is that there can't be a run on the banks because even if everyone tried to get their money... the banks will not give it to you!

Thought this was something that you might find interesting!

Personally, I think WaMu is the most at risk for going down. I always placed them at number two, right behind Bear Stearns. Scary thing is third is probably BofA. This is for the top tier, not the mid or little players. Lots of them will go under in this crisis.
When it comes down to it, the people will always shout, "Free Barabbas." They love Barabbas. He's one of them. He has the same dreams. He does what they wish they could do. That other guy is more removed, more inscrutable. He makes them think. "Crucify him."

why does this surprise you ?
theres only about 1% actual physical money in circulation compared to electronic money

If 10% of people tried to take all their money out as cash, it just wouldn't happen.

I 'd say the customer is entitled to a sizable monetary charge from the bank for insufficent funds.

Wouldn't that be ironic?

I agree, screw Washington Mutual.

As one of the posters on that article said, "why anyone would want to bank with people who called themselves WaMu is beyond me."

These guys recently got a major capital infusion (bail out) that they have no way of paying back. They are going to crash and burn just like Bear Stearns.

And just like Bear Stearns, I'm sure JP Morgan would love to scoop up their profitable businesses at a major discount...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('evilgenius', 'P')ersonally, I think WaMu is the most at risk for going down.

After working with them as a vendor around 4-5 years back, three things became apparent about them :

1] They had expanded rapidly through acquisition and merger.
2] They were nowhere close to completing #1, meaning they had no idea what they even owned at any given point.
3] They had no idea or real timeline on completing #1.

On a side note, I'm surprised that Capital One is aggressively expanding, when their base demographic is the subprime loan business.

They "misplaced" a wire transfer of several hundred thousand dollars, of mine. They told me this with great good cheer, as if it happened everyday. I asked them, like, how can you misplace a digital wire transfer? Where the *&^*& is my money? If you don't "find" it in the next half hour, I'm calling the cops. That got them moving. Beyond freaking belief.

Oh boy...capital one...

I have friends with no jobs, unpaid bills, delinquent car payments, and no real prospects of paying back that debt any time soon who qualified for Capital One nooses.

I mean, no hassle platinum cards.

Personally, I'm shocked they haven't been reporting massive losses yet.

Really? You personally deal with money of that magnitude? Or do you mean business or a home?

Capital One are the biggest mailer of "pre-approved" credit card applications I have ever seen. Mailshots from other outfits were a great rarity and dried up a couple of years ago. At the same time Capital One were spamming me monthly. Over the years they accounted for at least 9/10 of the credit card mailshots I binned. They are fucked.

I always try to fill the prepaid shipping "return" envelopes with unwanted coupons and ship them right back to the credit card companies.

If Capital One doesn't want to take advantage of a 10 cent discount on ground beef, it's not my fault.

You have to call ahead to lay aside that much cash, I have always gotten half of what I asked for and lately only 2000 at a time.
they say
We don't know why everyone is taking the cash out, it makes our books look bad
(They have to borrow cash from other banks cause they do not have it)
They hope it gets paid back but lately there is none coming in at all.

the day the gov released 200 billion dollars I went to the bank the they said they would be getting a large amount of cash at the end of the week.
I placed my order.

Never take out more than 4000.
and never keep it at your house ever.
the small gold coins have to be buried 4 foot deep if you dont want the gold detectors to find it

best way is a post hole gigger and a small 4 inch pvc pipe almost to ground level. Filll the hole and dig another hole 1 foot away and put a crushed pop can about 6 inches underground.

Dont forget where you buried it.

I rarely deal with more than a couple of hundred at a time! This was the proceeds of a home sale in Washington.

Hounded them for 24 hours, without success. After I told them I'd given up, and would leave it in the hands of the police, they resolved the little matter within half an hour. The money was being transferred from one of their branches to another one, so it wasn't complex, and they were given 3 days to do it. I was hopping mad.

I rarely use cash for purchases over $100.

I can't imagine wanting to carry about $4,200 in cash. What exactly are you doing with $4,200 that you can't do with debit cards, credit cards, checks, etc.?

I will defend your right to carry cash but I personally don't see the need for it.

Moreover, we are moving into a cashless society...
