What PC Euphemisms Do You Love to Hate?

Unread postby TWilliam » Sat 05 Apr 2008, 20:45:41

Personally, "politically correct" language makes me want to barf. What are some of the PC terms that totally bug you, and what do they really mean?

Here's one of my all time favorites:

Special needs children.

Translation?

Hyena food...

(Ok ok, so that translates a lot of them. But you get the idea...)

"mentally ill"

I prefer "loon" myself.

I thought a Loon was a bird. "Crazy mofo" works better for me on that one. But thanks for playing Ludi, I notice you frequently do when I chime in. Kindred spirits I suspect... :)

On a totally unrelated note... ever listen to Tom Waits' version of Waltzing Matilda? What a great expression of pathos... he's good at that...

(I'm listening to it atm, which is why I ask...)

Neutering or feminizing non-gender specific words:

congressperson
congresswoman

mailperson
mailwoman

salesperson
saleswoman

Even dictionary.com goes with this pseudo social bastardization.

Close, but Wiley's Dictionary states that the politically correct designation of 'mail-man' is actually person-person...

We've had a bunch of feminists and testicle-less males at school bitching over the term freshman.

First-years is a term I think is ridiculous.

European-American, African-American, Asian-American lables applied to people who have never left North America in their entire lifespan.

If I see someone called a SOMETHING-American then they better be an immigrant from Something!

Hell even the majority of Hispanic-Americans were actually born in the USA and some of their families have been here since 1836!

One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Here in the UK we don't use the term freshman, we just use first-years. They have obviously infiltrated our society... Its a conspiracy!

I don't like this treating of children as if they are special, more important than adults, can't discipline them and so forth. Children these days are unruly and have an overinflated sense of self importance.

fisher, instead of fisherman.

codependent. Most people who use it have a codependent relationship with trendy labels. It means dependancy on a drug or alcohol, by proxy, but no one I know uses it correctly.

"on the ground"--favorite of anchor people everywhere after 911. It was used for every conceivable crisis situation, regardless of it's intended meaning. Referring to a situation as seen "on the ground" means what you are seeing via direct experience, at the center of the clusterf***. And it means literally being "on the ground".

Best example of misuse of term-- NASA officials being asked what they were seeing "on the ground" when asked to describe the astronaut's predicament on the space shuttle.

One term I find annoying is the term, Hispanic because it has no meaning whatsoever other than to tag people with brown skin who may have ancestors originating from Spanish-speaking countries. The term is utterly meaningless and anyone using that horrible term should be sent to a re-education camp for awhile.

I think people should be able to say whatever they want, so long as they aren't threatening to physically harm someone.

Undocumented Immigrant. Huh? WTF?

That one takes the cake in my book. Following the same logic a thief who breaks in to your house could be an 'unscheduled visitor.'

As Orwell wrote in 1984 "The revolution will be complete when the language is perfect."

Indeed. And people wonder why we have headlines in the paper like this:
