Alrights guys, motivational speech.
Probably you will all hate me for this, but here I go.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
I really like the community here, and I am often awed by the intelligence of the posts I see, on a diverse range of topics. But I am saddened by the propensity of fatalism that perforates. It is precisely the intelligence displayed here that is sorely needed in the world, but many here advise to stay low, or tell stories of despair.
Its a malady that afflicts intelligent people because they often see the world systemically for the cruelty that really exists. When you see the world clearly, and others around you don't, you can feel isolated. It can make you feel pessimistic, and ultimately apathetic. For those who explore the darkness that surrounds banking concentration, and power in general, this feeling of helplessness is particularly striking.
The key is not optimism, or pessimism, but
activism. The best way to predict the future is to create the future (in your little way, I'm not trying to be too grandiose). There is always something we can do. Write a blog, newsletter, write a speech, or write to a representative or the media (they are interested because they need to know what concerns the public for their own agendas). Meet regularly with friends to study a particular topic. Develop your knowlege together. Form a pressure group. Hit the streets. This is how all change happens, and there has been a lot of change in this world for the good.
Of course activism etc. is never easy. Its frustrating. But it is rewarding too. And its, frankly, essential.
(In a small way, posting at PO.com is serving such a public service, by disseminating lots of useful discussion).
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am aware that the world is in a dire situation. Power is concentrated like never before. But here is why I think there is room for optimism.
People tolerate and rationalise away the steady erosion of democracy, and the concentration of wealth and power while
1) The toys continue to get shinier
2) They are not denied acess to basic necessities
3) Voodoo-infinite-growth-economic rationalisations continue to confuse people to support institutions that are working against them (banks etc.)
We are used to seeing apathy in the Western precisely because of those things.
But we know those things are going to
end. People are going to suffer. People are going to get hungry. Those are preconditions for revolution. It will deligitimise the powers that be. Public opinion will shift. People will start listening to arguments like the ones posted here. They will look for alternative economic models. Public opinion is everything.
The American public already feels extremely isolated from the elites. They know deep down that their interests are not really being looked to. That is why voting turn out is so low. Polls consistently show that the public are to the left of both parties- anti-war, pro-environmental, pro-comprehensive healthcare etc.
Public opinion in much of the Third World already views Western institutions with extreme skepticism, as they're already living with the results. We're probably talking about a 1/3 of the world here. They already view the IMF etc. as conspiracies against them, and often they protest in the thousands.
Wait till economic slowdown really kicks in.
Its a battle of ideas the that the PTB still haven't won, even though they say they have. And Eli you are right that spreading the word itself is an important act of resistence. Don't underestimate it. The elites have powerful institutions of propaganda at their disposal, but the best mass media is the masses themselves, because deep down we trust other people on our level over powerful people.
The key is for people with alternative ideas to be ready.
The disaster capitalists will be in waiting to manipulate the shock, but the more they try to stuff in their sacks, the more those sacks are going to fray, the more outraged people will be. We need to be ready and confident to influence the debate in those chaotic times when the world can move in any number of directions.
