That's ok, since the wells probably wouldn't be used much longer anyway ;)

Metal Boom Spurs Cape Town Crime as Statues, Rail Tracks Vanish
By Nasreen Seria
March 28 (Bloomberg) -- Cape Town city officials erected six- foot bronze statues of Coline Williams and Robert Waterwitch on the sidewalk of a shopping precinct after the two South African anti-apartheid guerillas were killed in a 1989 bomb blast.
The 600-kilogram figures (1,320 pounds) were snatched by thieves this month, and found five days later in a scrap yard in the suburb of Bonteheuwel. Police said they were sold for less than 10,000 rand ($1,247), or 3 percent of their original cost. …

perhaps we'll be entertained if/when something similar happens to the sculptures in front of SF city hall. it will take rigging skills and sheer stupidity, given that police cars go by there once every 10 seconds.

hard to find a price for bronze. $2 a kilogram will have to do, $1 a pound.

Einstein was right about human stupidity being infinite. Local thief tried to steal aluminum cable from a home construction site. They found his bolt cutters at the power pole with a big ntch burnt in the blades. HE TRIED TO CUT IT WHILE IT WAS HOT!!!! Apparently he survived, no body there.

Be not too hasty to draw conclusions about metal theft. I have been in my field for over 30 years and that entire time metal theft has been a significant issue. Increased metal theft may be indicative of a worsening economy but it always exists, no mater the economic state.

And yeah, some of the thieves are stupid. But also some are smart, and business minded. Be careful to laugh at them.

If (as I have seen evidence of) someone is willing to climb a 100 foot steel pole and cut the neutral wire down between 138kV HOT legs (AT NIGHT) he has guts. He also has strength, and he has some brains. He will survive TSHTF much better than most of us keyboard surfers here.

These people are (can be) tough and resourceful in a very personal way.
