Posting Tips

Unread postby TheDude » Mon 24 Mar 2008, 14:40:12

Let's share our tricks of the trade on posting links, pics, vids, even that oh-so-annoying streaming audio. Actually we should discuss how to disable that - talking pages make me cringe like nothin' else!

Don't forget to mention what hue of system you're using; for me, XP and Firefox.

Some favorite Firefox extensions:

Auto Copy

Everything you highlight with the mouse is copied to the clipboard. None of that dreary Ctrl-C stuff (except in certain circumstances) - massive time saver!

CoLT

When you right-click a link you can choose to "Copy Link Text and Location" as BBCode, allowing you to create text links here without using the site's built-in Linkmaker button (Image)

Thus I right click a link on this page and using CoLT I can automatically format it thus: Code of Conduct CoLT can also format in HTML, standard for blogs.

A limitation of CoLT is that Google searches provide URLs that can't be used as links here - you have to open the page to get the URL itself. Another useful Extension, then:

CustomizeGoogle

Among scores of handy tweaks this provides a "Save" selection after each Google search result, providing you with the option to Bookmark the link in a floating dialog box, with the page name and true URL, which you can add to a thread here with the Linkmaker button mentioned above.

I'll explain that Linkmaker later - if someone else hasn't already!

...damn peakoil should use unicode.

A few things that come up a lot...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]how do I post a picture
http://www.peakoil.com/fortopic28579.html

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('steam_cannon', 'I') haven't checked into photobucket, but here is how to do it with http://tinypic.com
It's just one easy step.
Image

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]406 not acceptable
http://www.peakoil.com/fortopic37112.html

OK....so I've never had this happen before. I was trying to make a post and kept getting this error.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('steam_cannon', '.')..sounds like an ASCII VS Unicode problem. Also the blank line
problem people are describing... If you are using a text editor like
notepad, (depending on the programs install settings) it may have
snuck in an invisible spacer code into your text that doesn't work with
the server. In fact if you are using word or any text editor and you
run into this problem after copying your text, the problem is
probably because of the text editor.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Making links look nice
http://www.peakoil.com/fortopic38099.html

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('TheDude', 'U')se your handy Link Maker button, the one that looks like this: Image

1. Copy your link's URL.
2. Click the Link Maker button. You'll be asked for the URL first, then the name of the link.

Thus these results: View more Emoticons

I started a thread the other day on Posting Tips but no one 'cept zensui took an interest so ah well. I show a couple other ways to make those nifty links there if you're interested.

-Dude

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('steam_cannon', 'I') like to use http://tinyurl.com/ sometimes:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Example:', 'T')itle: About Something
Link: http://tinyurl.com/5ene2

Text: "tinypic.com is great for posting images..."

Tinyurl.com works great for making short urls. The make URL
button is good, but I think using a link visually flows better.

Regarding posting videos, I suggest posting links to videos. Videos
that have autoplay as a feature can be really annoying as they
autoplay in the "Topic Review" window while you are trying to write a
post. Also, videos don't work unless you have the right
plugins/browser and the flashvideo button doesn't work right for many
people, but linking to youtube.com will. So in general, I suggest
posting links to videos, not trying to display them on the page.

Think twice before responding to posts that you think are "flames", "offensive", and so on. Read the post 2 or more times if necessary, because chance are that your mood, or other, is "tinting" your perception of some type of posts (that may be common here, like "dark humour).

Another tip...

Posting links to high resolution youtube.com videos

You tube now has high resolution display options. This is nice for
seeing text in videos that would be otherwise unreadable in low rez.
Just add "&fmt=18" to a video's URL.

Peak Oil (high res)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-y_0fpF1bA&fmt=18

Peak Oil (low res)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-y_0fpF1bA

YouTube Testing HD?! Just add "&fmt=18" to a video's URL!

Thought of another good one: Nuke Anything Enhanced. Adds an oh-so-handy "Remove This Object" to your Firefox right click. You die, oversized image that's making me scroll!

MR Tech Link Wrapper wraps links, wow. Lotsa ways to skin that particular cat but it's the one I use.

Nifty tip about hi-res YouTube, thanks steam_!

Lately I've added a shortcut on the toolbar for the "Find all posts by TheDude" link in my profile, so I can check up on what I've posted for replies, very handy.

I keep the View posts since last visit open on a dedicated tab, too.

Another handy extension: Cooliris Previews. When you mouseover a link a little icon appears, if you place the pointer over it a dedicated window shows up with the page. The window disappears if you move outside it. Lets you see full size views of Google Images hits - indispensable just for that. (This stops working if you select certain settings in CustomizeGoogle though, but it's easily remedied)
