Pandora

Wow! I just discovered Pandora

Pretty impressive website that streams high-quality music exactly tailored to your particular musical tastes.

Equally amazing is that I've only just discovered it. I never knew about it before; apparently it's been around for quite some time. But it has never appeared on StumbleUpon and I haven't seen it referenced or discussed anywhere at all. What a gem!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pandora', 'T')he Music Genome Project

On January 6, 2000 a group of musicians and music-loving technologists came together with the idea of creating the most comprehensive analysis of music ever.

Together we set out to capture the essence of music at the most fundamental level. We ended up assembling literally hundreds of musical attributes or "genes" into a very large Music Genome. Taken together these genes capture the unique and magical musical identity of a song - everything from melody, harmony and rhythm, to instrumentation, orchestration, arrangement, lyrics, and of course the rich world of singing and vocal harmony. It's not about what a band looks like, or what genre they supposedly belong to, or about who buys their records - it's about what each individual song sounds like.

Since we started back in 2000, we've carefully listened to the songs of tens of thousands of different artists - ranging from popular to obscure - and analyzed the musical qualities of each song one attribute at a time. This work continues each and every day as we endeavor to include all the great new stuff coming out of studios, clubs and garages around the world.

It has been quite an adventure, you could say a little crazy - but now that we've created this extraordinary collection of music analysis, we think we can help be your guide as you explore your favorite parts of the music universe.

We hope you enjoy the journey.

Here's a tip on Pandora that comes from using it a bit: It works well, especially when you type in more obscure artists from your favorite genre of music. Example: don't type in "Pink Floyd" if you want psychedelic music, you'll get classic rock; Type in "King Crimson" instead.

What's the advantage over limewire/frostwire type file sharing? My family burns a lot of tunes but I do have trouble finding more obscure stuff. Can you download songs with this like you can with frostwire? What does it cost?

You can't download and burn songs from Pandora. It doesn't cost anything.

I'm always on the lookout for new music to listen to but when I torrent something from a new musician, most of the time I'm less than pleased. Of course, every once in a while I find something I really, really, really like alot. It's trial and error.

However, with Pandora, I can input a favorite musician or song and it will find other music that is most "genetically" similar. Or I can input several favorite musicians so that a I can achieve a particular mix. It's truly amazing... I'm hardly ever disappointed.

BTW, has anyone ever heard of the Alex Skolnick Trio? Heavy metal guitarist plays jazz. God, that guy's good. He's one of the artists that I use because he's not widely known (or pigeonholed). Pandora will come up with music that has both a hard-rock-tinged-with-jazz sound. So, because I used Alex Skolnick, I have just discovered David Gilmore (Unified Presence) and I get selections by guitarists like Greg Howe and others.

And since I have these mixed in with stuff similar to Dave Holland, and with stuff similar to The James Taylor Quartet, I get a mix of exactly what I want to hear.

No, it's entirely web based, no downloads, but it's free. It's good for having on around the house, or anywhere with an internet connection. I use it instead of the radio or Sirius when I'm at home, because it can be very specific as to the type of music you like. You give it the names of a few artists, and a few songs, and it knows what you want, immediately.

I like Pandora. It's especially good for finding new music that you otherwise would not hear on the radio or other venues. The load times are good, and I hardly ever have problems with stream-stutter. I'm wondering how this site, with virtually no advertising, can stay afloat. It's not like streaming real-time, high-quality audio to the masses is cheap.

I'm also curious to know the differences between live.fm and pandora. I browsed through live.fm a few times, but the interface seemed more geared to teeny-boppers, since it is marketed as a social music network. There also seems to be differences in the way the service operates. Apparently you can upload songs to live.fm (download as well?), and the few times I've listened I noticed that the quality wasn't so good. Does live.fm have its own pool of music like pandora.com, or is it user-supplied?

I like it when we have people who join up just to spam. I do use pandora, but it makes it pathetic when some ass munch just joins to promote some bs
