What about Platyhelminthes? They are endowed with the eyespot unlike our nematode friends. :(

Wait...why are we talking about worms?

Yep, makes it tough to do anything.

One of the websites mentioned panic attacks can be triggered by stressful life events. For many people, learning about peak oil is a very stressful experience. I wouldn't be surprised if some people experience more panic from it.

I used to suffer from horrible anxiety. It was a plague everytime I left the house.

Panic attacks are characterized by the fight or flight response. You either try to fight off the panic and sometimes it gets worse or you flee and all is well.

Things like a government that completely disregards the laws and the citizens worry me. At least I can get a tiny bit of satisfaction by writing and talking to my senators and representatives.
Things like global warming, continued loss of clean water and the disappearance of plants and animals (all important parts of the environment in some way), the increasing saber rattling of many nations-these things, even though they may not be immediately life-threatening to me and mine, worry me much more because there is nothing I can do to fix them.

Worry is different, in my experience. I experienced the feelings of fear first, and then found something to worry about, a reason to be "afraid." Eventually I became "afraid" of nearly everything.

Kind of like PTSD from combat. Thing is, you wouldn't want to admit to behavior like this as people will label you as weak and nutz person.

Heck, I wouldn't even admit it to myself. I had to get really ill before I got help.

It feeds on itself. The longer one experiences these types of disorders the more ingrained they become. One may feel "normal" for quite awhile and then, bang, they return out of the blue again.

Geez, not me. I know how dependent on medications I am, and it worries me a lot. I've tried repeatedly to go off them, as has my sister, who is more ill than I am. It hasn't worked for us. I definitely have a love-hate relationship with the darn pills.

Ludi, I had a pretty bad on and off depression that lasted about 2 years. It ended about a year ago. It was hardly disabling, but I really hated feeling that way, ever. It was probably linked to fluctuating hormones, and if I ever get it back, I swear, I'm definitely going on meds, hormones. Seems to have sorted itself out. It's easy for people who have garden variety blues to insist that gingko, ginseng, etc.. will help, but, in fact, they don't help with a serious depression.

I had an ugly string of them in the mid 80's which lasted about 2 months and then never appeared again. They are freaky. Really horrible. One minute you're feeling fine and then BAM!!! You have to have had one to fully appreciate the sheer nastiness of the episodes.

The only possible explanation I can think of was the ... uh... weight lifting 'supplements' I started taking... and immediately quit taking, heh.

Make sure you get your thyroid checked, have your doctor listen closely for a heart murmur, mitral valve problems can precipitate an anxiety attack. For those worried about long term access to medicines, cognitive behavioral therapy is probably the best. STAY away from the benzos like ativan or valium, ssri s work but they take time. Good luck folks, trying times like now are sure to bring about lots of additional anxieties.

Another think to look into is if you have ever had vertigo, or anything similar. There is a weird feedback system between the ear's labyrinths and panic attacks.

Valium is probably the least harmful tranq if taken for a short period of time. If taken for a long period, and in very low dose, also relatively harmless.
