Odd Occurance at Local Credit Union...

Unread postby buddylee » Mon 17 Mar 2008, 15:09:46

My Mom, who lives in central Arizona, was at her credit union this past Saturday to deposit a check (and clear out her money market account).

While standing in a long line, they kept making announcements over the loudspeaker that if anyone was there to cash a check or make a withdrawal from their accounts that they could not help them. They were taking deposits only.

Is that normal? She doesn't normally go on Saturdays, so she wasn't 100% sure but she said people in line were pretty pissed off about it which leads us to believe that it wasn't standard operating procedure...

What was the name of the credit union; The Roach Motel?

Roach Motel??

Problems at a credit union? Sounds like someone got told they weren't going to get a visit from the armored car company anytime soon.
Or, the auditors were on their way there...

It's totally normal. I have seen this many times. When the regular tellers get backed up then other employees try to reduce the line by doing deposits. The other employees don't have cash boxes check out so they can only take deposits. When this is done the over all line goes faster. The regular tellers take the people that need cash back and the temp tellers take the deposits.

The sky is not falling, yet. When it does you will know by the sign hanging in the window that says "Bank closed".

Credit Unions are nothing but mortgages and car loans. I can't see any of them surviving this. Get out now while you still can.

I spat in the face of GM of my local bank in Buenos Aires (2001) He said me something I don't remember exactly what, but I decided it was worth a spit. Not that I am much of a spitter, never before or after. So there was a cop guarding specifically that bank ( I guess paid by the bank as well) , a foot and a half away from the scene. He didn't even turn the face to look at me. I had $3500 in that banko and got back a few months later around $2700. ( I was lucky not to have much) I wonder when it will come here.

Well the guy got lucky to have the cop there anyway. Perhaps I wouldn't have stopped on the spit.

ALL this shit happened because 1 ( one ) plane with the cash from the Fed got late 9supposedly late ) for 1 day. And of course because someone took out around 250 trucks loaded with USD just a week or two before this .

No I mean why its always me? First Soviet Union crash and those salaries of $4-7-10-20 a month with unemployment around 30-40%. Then Argentina. Now USA is going to the ditch. WTF?

Disaster? No, riots and stuff are actually fun. A lot of fun. I had a great time. But after they over, shit coming knocking on your door. No jobs, 60-72 hour weeks for those who do have jobs, misery pay, ets. I ended up making about 35c an hour and 52-55c an hour for overtime. Everyone was making 3-4-5 times less than before.

In talking to a friend who works at a credit union, I was told that sometimes the person who is supposed to order cash doesn't order enough, or doesn't order any, so they might run short on a given day, as the next delivery of cash might not be for a day or two (they don't get delivery daily). When that happens, the tellers sometimes have to give customers smaller bills than they really want, and they are very happy to see depositers with lots of large bills. They are somewhat afraid of a panic if they are unable to give the customers what they want for withdrawals--I'm surprised that the story that began this thread didn't result in a run on the credit union after the story got around and rumours got going.

Canada more likely. There are were 3-4 million canadians here illegally, now it will be time for them to go back along with a few millions americans. But I doubt Canadians will have a great time themselves

First of all the banks computers were probably down which means they can still take deposits and post them later but since they don't know or have access to know how much money a person has in their account, they can't withdrawl.

As to having 3-4 million canadians in the US; I'd like to see some facts or evidence of this. the only morons who'd be that stupid would be albertans and that is their whole population.

I would say that is true> I have close friends who work at local financial institutions, and this happens occasionally, especially when they get new software, or the companies that the computers are connected to have problems (like a hurricane in Florida a few years ago that caused banks in Wisconsin to lose computer access for the cash card machines, because everything was networked through a company in Florida). Before computers, their bookkeeping systems were set up to work without computers, but computers have been used long enough that the paper back up is no longer available immediately to all the tellers. If certain computers aren't available, what uNkNowN ElEmEnt wrote is exactly correct--the tellers can't access the patron's records to check their account balances.

I give that a third. I would see if the credit union is now able to give withdrawals. I would imagine so. Did anyone ask why at the time of the visit? I'm sure they would have had an explanation- even if you asked them now. Systems being down make the most sense to me, especially with it happening on the weekend as most IT departments are not there on Saturdays. They would have to have been called in.
