short introduction

Postby overlever » Fri 14 Mar 2008, 10:33:25

Dear reader,

My name is Ruben, I'm 34 years old, born, raised and living in The Netherlands. Hobbies include nature walks, solution engineering (together with my industrial designer wife), and wasting company time on assorted internet forums.

How did I find this site? Via PO The Netherlands (peakoil.nl). Why am I interested in PO? Because it will have a dramatic impact, and the current social order is not to my liking and needs changing. :)

NB: the name "overlever" does not have anything to do with levers placed over something. It is the dutch word for survivor.
Nature shows that with the growth of intelligence comes increased capacity for pain, and it is only with the highest degree of intelligence that suffering reaches its supreme point.

Good for you! So many people don't seem to understand the moral & ethical responsibility of firearm ownership...It's good to hear that you do!

I understand the freedom part. But can you explain what you mean by the moral and ethical responsibility? This isn't a challenge. Just interested to hear what you mean.

I have also been thinking about buying a gun and taking a class. But I have no feelings about it one way or the other other than i think it would be kind of fun.

Like, what are the circumstances that owning and using a gun would be a matter of morals and ethics?

In my opinion...a gun / firearm owner has the moral & ethical responsibility to see that this gun does not make it into a childs hands. To know enough to NEVER fire a rifle up into the air. To have the knowledge on how to keep it clean (or the barrel could explode killing or injuring you & all around you). Know how to handle a gun safely while climbing over a fence. To know a blank is as deadly as a bullet from close range...and many other things!

It's the same type of responsibility that a driver is obligated to know what a stop sign means...if they don't know what it means, they have no business driving on a public street.

I have never accepted the "I didn't know the gun was loaded" excuse...and if it were up to me, I would assign 75 years in prison to anybody who used that excuse on me.

Well, that's my opinion for the day. :)

This was pretty much my thinking. Most people I know would probably laugh at me if I told them I took a class on learning about shotguns, but screw them. I came away from the class (8 hours) understanding all of the basics about shotguns, safety, ammo types, shooting, cleaning, etc. I wouldn't have gotten that from trying to learn from my buddies or whoever. Most of them don't know squat. It's something I wanted to be very careful about. You see on the news all the time about some child that got hurt or killed because of improper firearms usage, so I totally agree that owning a firearm comes with moral responsibilities.

As an aside, I never grew up around guns or anything. My dad is anti-gun, but I found out I'm a gun nut. Maybe it's because I never learned at a young age, but shooting is FUN. I picked up a pistol and am going back to the NRA for pistol training next month. I highly recommend trying it if you've never learned.

Eagle's introduction

Postby Mr-Eagle » Fri 14 Mar 2008, 14:40:54

Hello everyone,

I'm a 17 year old student from the Netherlands.

I've been reading these forums for about a year now, a year ago i thought peakoil was nonsense.. but after a couple of months i saw the oilprice passing 70.. 80.. 90.. so i was panicking and i went to read everything about po I could find..

It seems there is a "perfect storm" of events going on right now.. . The dollar is collapsing, inflation, oilproduction is peaking, foodprices are skyrocketing.. etc.. The future of our world obviously isnt good.

Good luck to everyone :D

Does it seem to anybody else that we have a high percentage of Norwegians, relative to other Europeans, on this site?

Further, the new member intro rate seems to be way up.

I guess when oil hits 150 we'll be getting a few intros a day.

Welcome. My first post was also motivated by the sense that there was a perfect storm brewing. That's a powerful emotion when you sense that sort of dis-harmonic convergence, kind of like the look of a rabbit when there is a storm rolling in (picture one of those cool Watership Down rabbits).

Got that right. Course, there are lots of ways to hurt yourself or others with guns, watch some of these Interesting gun videos to see some prime examples. Especially the one I linked to involving the...male delicates...

Heh, Dick Cheney has nothing on Bobby Knight. Old Bob has managed to accidentally shoot three people and he was doing it long before Dick ever had a dream to accidentally shoot someone. Dick Cheney wishes he was Bobby Knight. :-D
