$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Stratovarius', 'I') don't see how anyone can survive without a cell phone. :\

Just sayin'.

Why? How many times do you see people walking around Target in a complete selfish daze on cellular phone, discussing the miserable, vapid details of their life? Life is stressful enough without dealing with morons hogging the grocery store aisle so that they can discuss the colonoscopy their mother had earlier that morning. Most cell phone conversations (and I'm somewhat guilty of this too) are pointless and unnecessary. We survived for years without them. It's only been in the last 5-10 years that they've been a permanent extension on our bodies. I know people (several people!) with 5-7 year-old kids that have cell phones these days. Pointless and futile.

Internet is king to me. Doesn't have to be the fastest, but 3 Mb DSL for $25 a month is a fine deal.

I have a dumpster-dived 25" TV attached to a digital tuner and rooftop antenna. Get 20 channels that way (multiple PBS feeds). Rarely watch anything (okay... college basketball).

I do not have the video game gene. Period.

I have a prepaid cell phone. Pay less than $100 a year. I've used about 140 "minutes" in the last year. Mostly, 20 second "hey would'ya meet me here" calls. It is vaguely reassuring for emergencies.

Do have a cheap $30 MP3 player (SD chip based) with an FM tuner. Very nice distraction when saving energy other ways...like hanging clothes on the clothesline or waiting for a bus. The net energy savings in making things like public transit more tolerable (plus the propaganda value of broadcast media) suggest that portable audio devices may be a net positive.
At 1% annual growth, human bodies will incorporate every gram in the observable universe in approximately 10,170 years.
