I suspect this sort of BS (and much worse) probably has gone on in every war. This is the first one, though, where the soldiers go back to their barracks and immediately post video of it on YouTube.

Of a thousand burning bridges
Sifting through the ashes every day
What we thought would never end
Now is nothing more than a memory
The way things were before
I lost my way" - OCMS

Yep. And soldiers on all sides do it (not that this excuses such behavior)...

Bottom line, humans suck. Especially youthful males when you give groups of them guns and drop them amongst others that don't have them...

They're not going insane. This is just the excreta of a particularly nauseating culture.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Time O'Brien', 'W')hat sticks to memory, often, are those odd little fragments that have no beginning and no end....

...Ted Lavender adopting an orphan puppy--feeding it from a plastic spoon and carrying it in a rucksack until the day Azar strapped it to a Claymore antipersonnel mine and squeezed the firing device.

The average age in our platoon, I'd guess, was nineteen or twenty, and as a consequence things often took on a curiously playful atmosphere, like a sporting event at some exotic reform school. The competition could be lethal, yet there was a childlike exuberance to it all, lots of pranks and horseplay. Like when Azar blew away Ted Lavender's puppy.

"What's everyone so upset about?" Azar said. "I'm mean, Christ, I'm just a boy."

And upon further reflection, I realize this is likely why former soldiers are frequently shunned in 'polite society'; because we all know instinctively that this is how they act. Armies have always pretty much raped, pillaged and plundered their way along as they advance their campaign...

They probable are treating it like a video game situation. Up close with a sword is a different experience.

Yep, and just as we've raised a generation of Nintendo soldiers for today's push-button warfare, back then we schooled them in the arts of sword & shield, bow & pike, as well as instilling the mindset necessary for effectively wielding them. It's no accident that the most popular video games are so-called 'first-person shooters'...
