I hear you Jason, I got 4 dogs, 3 cats and a horse, I sold my bull because I couldn't stand the thought of slaughtering him and he couldn't breed with his mom and sisters so I sold him to a neighbor that needed fresh blood for his cows.

I can't come down too hard on this guy though, while you and I find his behavior abhorrant, I'm willing to believe this is a behavior that's a result of where he's been and what he may have been doing over there. Stress can do strange things to your mind, desensitization is one of the first things to happen if you're in a combat zone. If you see human children blown to pieces weekly, then a pup ain't going to mean much. He also may be feeling a need to show his comrades how hard he is, brutality can be a positive in war. He's saying, "I'm hard and cold and you guys can depend on me to be cool under fire".

Living with the constant threat of death hanging over your head can really play with some peoples morality. Say a prayer for the pup, but say a prayer for this soldier too.

Dogs are not pets in Iraq they are pests or in some cases lunch. I agree it was rather cruel what the soldier did but in that context we should think of the human suffering in Iraq before one gets all mushy about animal cruelty in a third world country tattered by war. It is perplexing to analyze the death of an animal and how quickly someone can correlate it as being equal to that of the life of a human. I just don't get it!

Uncovering, that is quite a graphic photo, and that child(and I assume relative;father?)certainly deserves our sympathy and empathy. The dicotomy between people's feelings for animals and feelings for people, might be expressed this way: If we look hard enough, we might just find that human life and other animal life ARE of equal value. It is unfortunate, (caused by many reasons), that most people quantify human life far above other animal life. This may explain why some folks on this thread express their outrage when they see animals treated thusly. It can also be explained, that seeing how we humans treat each other(aka your photo),that some folks have just given up on people and find it easier to express their sympathies for other fellow creatures that have no say.
No bleeding heart liberal here, no animal rights activist either, no hippie whack job, or vilifier of human inneptitude. Just some one who does see the equality between all living things.
