pizza tonight for dinner

Unread postby canis_lupus » Tue 04 Mar 2008, 01:39:43

I read these boards as much as anyone else, I suppose. The only real proof of reality is how much I pay nowadays for diesel. Somehow the bad news stays on the computer screen and hasn't seemed to get me personally where I live.

Mrs. Lupus and I had long days and decided to treat ourselves to a pizza. When asked, the owner of the pizza joint we frequent told me that flour has gone through the roof and Gonella, his bread supplier, has raised prices four times in the last five months. He said that when I go to Jewel to get milk, think of him, because cheese has doubled.

That's not the kicker -- every one of his deliverymen (with the exception of the guy who comes by to sharpen his knives every other week) has added a delivery charge to his bills to cover the cost of fuel.

So my doomer meter just went up another notch. Homebrew biodiesel season is almost here and I guess I'm going to start stocking the pantry even more.

Jeezum!

Pizza is going to get clobbered . . .

1. Relatively high cost of energy to fire ovens constantly.
2. Relatively high cost of gasoline to deliver.
3. Relatively high cost of cheese, which is about 95% the cost of a plain pizza - dough and sauce are very cheap in comparison.

Add it all up . . .

Closures, reduced hours, higher prices.

Not a good time to be a pizza franchisee/owner.

My favorite pizza is Trader's Joe's at $4.00 a 12 inch round cooked in wood fired ovens in Italy, frozen and shipped halfway around the globe. It does seem to be one pleasure that peak oil will certainly put an end to. However, I though pizza was mostly profit anyway.

Is it me or some other people notice, that as soon as you become regular at some small pizzeria, there is less and less cheese on your pizza?

Praet - Wow, never thought about it, but that makes sense.

I have definitely been unhappy with my level of cheese recently.

To me, it's pretty simple - expect to see no sauce until I bite in.

When I was making pizza, way back in the 90s, the cost breakdown went something like this for a small cheese:

Dough - 8 cents.
Sauce - 18 cents.
Cheese - 120 cents.

I'm sure the ratio is worse now in favor of cheese.

End of the day, the best way to save money if you're making the pizza is - skimp on the cheese and meats, and go heavy on the sauce and veggies (except olives).

Anything from Trader Joe's is my favorite. Too bad all of the country doesn't have access.

Surprisingly here in Poland I found a great one. The best of the best (except some in the US).

It is called Stonehenge.
