$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('roccman', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('basil_hayden', 'A')s far as which of your spidey holes I was referring to, I was referring to the one in the ground, not the one in your GF.

Another class act by one of PO's "veteran" posters.

Bravo garlic...you never disappoint!!!

You wouldn't know what a class act was if it bit you.

It's just that this site is SO drab. We could use some classy pictures hanging around. According to palentologist Paul Bahn, the esthetic sense predates Homo sapiens--so art is an essential element of humanness. In art is the beginning of metaphysics.

Alright, hows this for sublime imagery? The Queen Of England endorsed him.

Maybe you're right. Give it time and his work may be despised. Something tells me it should be, but I'm not sure. That guy could handle paint and he read his times. Man could he handle paint. You've got to see the originals to see what he could do with paint. Sure craftsmanship in the service of a subversive message. But then again, the world and culture was crumbling all around him. Maybe subversive was the only answer.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PenultimateManStanding', 'A')lright, hows this for sublime imagery? The Queen Of England endorsed him.

Well, considering that the royal family owns the vast majority of Leonardo Da Vinci's works and others like Ruebens etc, what else do the rest of us poor schleps have to vie for except that crap? Sad really.

First of all, us poor schleps couldn't afford a Picasso. Second, The Queen was profoundly moved by Picasso's provocative art. I was too. It's disturbing but profound. That's the point. Thomas Edison warned us that we would need a substitute for fossil fuels a century ago. Did we listen to him? did we listen to Picasso? Edison was a rational intellect, Picasso was an intuitive artist. They were both putting up the danger sign.

You're right, PMS, about the necessity of viewing originals. While I was in the Army 40 years ago I got to visit the major art museums of Europe. The one painting that remains vivid in my memory after so long is Goya's " The Third of May, 1808". (1814; Prado, Madrid)

When I die, I will be satisfied that I loved, and I won't be bothered that I'm "nobody." But there will be a lot of art works I will wish to have seen.

I spent a day in the Hermitage back in the mid 80's. What I remember most was the tough old ladies who worked there as security jacking people up for any minor transgression.

They were really tough.

Did you visit the Museum of the Seige of Leningrad? It's a very macabre place, and the old-lady guards are survivors of the seige. I've never been so careful of every word I spoke and gesture I made. There is a palpable tension in the place.
