A taste of things to come?

Unread postby jdumars » Wed 30 Jan 2008, 22:38:55

This ad on Craigslist seemed pretty routine, until I got to the "payment" part. I wonder if this is how things are going to be in the not-so-distant future?

Vintage Conn Professional "Ballroom" Trombone. Model 40H. Serial number "271144" which puts it at around 1929. Very fancy engraving on the bell. Slide in slide tuning. Heavy wear on the gold-plated finish but very few dings. 0.500" bore barrel. Comes with Harmony mute. A bargain at $250. One recently sold on EBAY for $495. Willing to accept 1/4 oz gold coin or 16 oz silver coins (American Eagle or Canadian Maple Leaf in BU or MS-65 condition only) OR nine one-ounce silver coins (American Eagle or Canadian Maple Leaf in BU or MS-65 condition as well) For the sake of a firm barter price and to prevent nitpicking, a 1/4 oz gold coin is $250, a 1/10 oz gold coin is $120, and a 1 oz silver coin is $19 if the coins are BU or MS-65 grade (shiny and clean coins).

I voted no. As the dollar becomes more worthless there will be increased use of gold and silver for trading but I can't see the fed giving up its manipulation monopoly.

I wonder if this kind of trade will get to the point where they'll pull another FDR bit and call in all the gold and perhaps this time around silver as well. They want everyone in on the ride down. It also makes the nanny state types nervous when anyone has a lifeboat.
