That's a first-strike buffalo coin Rocc. There's a lot of numismatic value wrapped into that price.

A stay away from them and stick to Canuck Maple Leafs. You get pure gold at spot plus a small margin.

Interesting link though!

Yes - I saw that, but somehow I think "panic" buying will oputstrip numismatic buying in the end...

eBay bitin' it hard. The pillow I mean.....

Unread postby I_Like_Plants » Tue 29 Jan 2008, 23:50:36

Wow. eBay's so far down the shitter that the bean-counters running the thing have decided to help sagging sales, that they will: Raise fees! They always raise fees! And change the feedback system such that ONLY BUYERS CAN LEAVE A NEGATIVE. If you're a seller you can't.

There are also other weird changes, like your feedback percentage is a rolling average over the last 30 days, and other small weirdnesses. I'm glad I left that sinking ship long ago. Oh - Linky - http://chatboards.ebay.com/chat.jsp?forum=1&thread=2

I suppose ePay figures since most listings don't get bids anymore they will knock a few measly cents off the listing fees. Of course <i>if</i> your item sells they will collect significantly higher fees on the end. How kind! Kind of like a kiss before getting gang banged in a prison shower.

I used to sell quite a bit on eBay. Living in a rural area it was an easy way to pick up a few extra bucks. With higher fees, fewer buyers, and more BS it's not worth it anymore.

Has it really gotten that bad? I was just getting ready to sell off some inventory. I haven't logged in to eBay since late 2006. Maybe I won't bother.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('I_Like_Plants', 'A')nd change the feedback system such that ONLY BUYERS CAN LEAVE A NEGATIVE. If you're a seller you can't.

That's kinda weird, but I don't really see where it would matter. I don't know that I've ever seen a seller cancel an auction because the top bidder had a low feedback score. They didn't ship till they got payment anyway, so all that they'll loose is the ability to leave punitive feedback if the buyer gives them bad feedback.

Seems like the biggest change is that they've gone to a sort of escrow model for new sellers and sellers with bad feedback. For them, Paypal won't release the funds until the buyer leaves positive feedback or 21 days elapse.

I don't know about everyone else, but I do probably half of my retail shopping through e-bay. It's the bomb for discount and used merchandise. I buy tons of stuff for my medical practice on e-bay.

I also buy a lot on Ebay and have been very satisfied, restricting feedback to sellers, will eliminate the practice of buyers waiting until they recieve feedback from the buyer until they post.

Ebay is not google. Raising fees is how they squeeze their bottom line. If google ran ebay, the fees would be going away, and the site would have more buyers and sellers.

As a former ebay pro, my take is that ebay's negatives are technological and structural. They need revenue- because the Ponzi scheme the website is constructed from is an inefficient pile of garbage. Structurally, the company is now a bureaucrat-driven clusterfuck with zombie management.

Ebay has been coasting on its laurels as the "First to Market".

Are there competitors? The only ones I've seen were niche sites that did auction types that E-Bay prohibits. Auctionarms.com for example.

I recently came across an online "stock exchange" for stuff called MetaExchange. So far it looks like toys, dolls, and coins, basically.
Why, I don't know. I suppose if it catches on it will evolve.

I know of some other sites where you can take the price listed for an item, or "make an offer". I would think competitors would be sprouting like mushrooms. Whether or not they're successful is another story.

I have tried about 7 times to post ebay info without success on this thread, if this doesn't work then I give up ;)

Anywhoo, Ebay is lowering listing fees a nickle for low cost auctions and $0.20 to $0.80 for the higher value items. At the same time they are making picture insertions which help sell yout stuff free.

Now here's the rub, they are raising their take of the total value as sold from 5.25% to 8.75% with a sliding but higher than before scale for more valuable items.

So say I sell an item for $3.00. It costs me about 85 cents to put the item up and sell it, 8.75% or 26.25 cents for their cut plus Paypal fees of about 5.5% for processing the sale, plus shipping and handling and postage etc.

All of those shipping and handling fees are where many sellers make up their expenses for putting up the auction and so on, so I forsee prices staying the same but shipping charges climbing as a result of these changes.

This site:

http://chatboards.ebay.com/chat.jsp?forum=1&thread=2

is a constantly-updating discussion by Ebay insiders - you have to be pretty goddamned insider to just find it! Some good insights and well, plenty of bitterness.

It's updating about 100 posts an hour, so there's always good reading.

I'm surprised there isn't a niche site for medical stuff because as a Powerseller on Ebay selling electronics, one thing I learned was, if you're not a doctor, DON'T TOUCH MEDICAL STUFF - just too much legal hassle, kind of like guns but different.

Well...there's Dotmed.com. They're ok. Most of their listings though are "call for price" kind of crap. One of the most important features of Ebay is the ability to efficiently comparison shop and find the lowest price on an item. I don't want to spend a bunch of time calling people. One nice thing about dotmed, though, is that most of the people on there are used medical equipment dealers. They have a relatively efficient process where you can post a listing for something you want and various dealers will put in bids to provide it. I did that a few months ago when I needed a new probe for my ultrasound machine. I got a half dozen bids or so and all of them very reasonable.
