I'd Love To Meet All Of You

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Mon 28 Jan 2008, 23:05:27

I met up with Albente in Central California a couple years ago. I drove around with him as he took wine orders from merchants and restaurants. Then we hung out, drank beer and talked. Recently I met up with Narz. We drank coffee and played chess and talked. There's something satisfying about meeting up with other peakoilers who aren't part of the consensus trance that we see all around us. I'd love to sit in a cold Montana cabin and share a cup of coffee with the plucky young doctor who is going against the grain. I'd love to sit on the Canadian island and talk about the weirdness of it all with the intrepid researcher of high crimes. I'd love to see the efforts of the man in the Arizona desert and spend an afternoon. I'd love to meet the bitter man in the Bitterroot Mountains with the fantastic Art Collection. I'd love to meet all of you.

Yeah, that goes for me too.

One of the great things about the Internet is the ability to handpick people (within already handpicked groups) to hang out with.

The Internet does have many advantages (such as being able to shut everyone out w/ the touch of a button) and talk to fifty-four people at once (& countless lurkers) on your own schedule but it's just no replacement for real life contact, not even close. An online community is not a "real" community. Even a two hour Internet outage will remind you of that.

I have talked with Ayoob, Narz, and PMS on the phone...

We are a unique and small group.

Somehow I think some of us may meet on the road to Olduvai.

All kidding aside, if such an event was to occur, I buy the tickets and attend. I mean it it when I say I would like to meet you all.

When you met in person, did you call each other by your PeakOil.com names?

There are some people here who I would like to meet -- mostly those who have much to teach, because I have much to learn.

There are some people here who I would go out of my way to avoid. Some who appear kind hearted and good spirited on the surface, and turn out to be rather treacherous, sneaky folks.
And then there are the ones who are just plain bitter and mean spirited.

Just like "real life", I guess.

Well, if nobody takes this seriously, that's understandable. But I'm not kidding, I'd buy a ticket to meet many of you. I think it would be fun. I'd take a couple days off in confidence that the resident poor racist wouldn't have the means to show up. Even if that scrappy SOB did show up, it could still be fun.

Hey, I was DEAD serious with my post. I am taking your thought seriously, and I responded seriously.

I agree with your buying a ticket to meet "many of you". I was just saying ... there are some folks here I wouldn't want to meet.

But the teachers of crafts animal husbandry, etc, the sharers of bits of "how to" info ... those would be at the top of my list of people to meet.

Sorry. It would be nice if we could pick a time and place for po.com members to meet. I'd show up.

Isn't it called ASPO?

I understand that this particular venue probably wouldn't be what you're looking for, but if there was ever a big peak oil get together somewhere, I'd probably attend.

I'm going to Finland at the beginning of August and I thought about making some kind of stop-over before I left. I was thinking about visiting friends in Montreal or going to New York to see a taping of The Daily Show, but a peak oil get together would also be pretty interesting. (In fact, I'm leaving directly because of peak oil)

Who owns the Island in BC? That would be wonderful. There's nothing more beautiful than beautiful British Columbia.

Such a meet up can be useful, besides just putting faces and voices to a handle and avatar. If someone in a region was to do the footwork that goes along with it, I'm sure a larger event can be arranged. All sorts of things to see, do, learn.

With several people congregating from other cities, hotel rooms can be arranged at better rates. Although it may only be $5 off for severl rooms for a night, every little bit helps.

Restaurant reservations can be made in advance. Parties of 10 or more can often receive special rates. It may only be a couple bucks off, but again, every bit helps.

Bring seeds. Have a seed exchange table. spare envelopes can be handy

Documents and research papers are handy. Paper copy or on CD. This would be homework any attendant can perform. How about a presentation about peak oil, invite local officials, see if the Mayor is free that night.

If the people are close together, specific topics can be discussed, or at least put on the agenda:
-local laws
-local weather/climate change
-local resources
-forming/joining a buyers group

Field Tours may be practical. A member's home can be toured or used for the duration of such an event. Take a good, hands-on look at what they have done for preps. How they do things. Have a BBQ.

I live in north central Florida. A 3 hour drive would range from Tampa to Pensacola to deep into Georgia. There would be about 7 Million people in that range if my math is right.

Who's close?

How about a Peak Oil Rendevoux like the old mountain men used to have? A big camp out jamboree. We'll all be living like that soon anyway. No hotels, motels, restaurants, plane tickets, all that fossil fuel crap. Maybe at Slab City...

BTW. Is Slabcity a reference to beer. In Ireland we call a crate of beer a slab.

Let's have it September 1st, 2008. Burlington, Vermont. I'll get us a venue for free and we will have a party and a discussion. If your interested I'll setup a seperate wiki site where we can organize this.

I think it is a great idea.

We can even Skype people in if they are interested.
