History Channel - Crude

Unread postby joewp » Wed 23 Jan 2008, 02:54:51

I just saw a promo for this, it looks interesting.

Crude

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'G')o on a sweeping adventure into the mystery of the history of oil. Where does it come from? When will it run out? Where is it driving us? This amazing fluid that powers our lives has made a 160 million year journey to reach our gas tanks and plastic bags. Learn about Earth's extraordinary Carbon Cycle, and the role of oil in current concerns regarding the environment. The Oil Age we now take for granted began less than a century and a half ago, and it could be over in our lifetime.

It's two hours. I hope it's better than the "Life After People" show.
It will run on:
Sunday, January 27 08:00 PM EST
Monday, January 28 12:00 AM EST

I'm wondering if this is the same as that Australian documentary:

Excellent! I don't have to wait until Sunday to see it. Thanks, Leanan and Blink, I'll watch it at that link.

One day US TV will make their own, original science programs...

IMHO, this is by far the BEST documentary of its kind (better than inconvenient truth and 11th hour and crude awakening) as it ties up peak oil and global warming into one coherent bundle.

I hope it will be possible to get this on NTSC DVD because right now it's only available in PAL region.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('BlinkBlink', 'I')t's a great doco. It's available on the web now on Australia's ABC. ABC

I've never gotten all the parts to play for me. Have you? I think it craps out on part 3.

Just a reminder...this airs tonight at 8pm ET. It's the US debut.

"Mega Disasters: Oil Apocalypse" reruns in the slot before "Crude." (It appears to be Doomer Porn Day on The History Channel. Documentaries about the end of the world all day!)

On the west coast it's on The History Channel starting at 8pm tonight. The whole family is planning to watch it! :)

Last night was an evening of fairly decent science shows filled with dinosaurs and early mammals, so this will follow nicely!

There's dinosaurs in this one, too, though only for short scenes.

It's not bad. Deffeyes is in it. Sadad al-Husseini is in it.

One thing I noticed...the Americans pronounce Ghawar "Gah-WAHR." Husseini pronounces it more like "Rah-WAHR."

I had to miss part in the middle; so did they mention what the end of the oil age will do to the food supply for 6-7 billion people? I rather hope they did, because little hints don't work. You have to be smacked up the side of the head with that kind of info.

Endorse The History Channel's "Crude"

Unread postby DetroitK13 » Mon 28 Jan 2008, 00:22:49

Just saw this program ("Crude": 8-10 P EST Jan 27), and it was simply the most well-done, informative, and attention-grabbing program I've seen related to peak oil concerns. This program should be endorsed and viewed by every single member of this site.

'An Inconvenient Truth' this isn't. It's also not 'Lost Worlds' or some other pompous History Channel program. It was concise, stuck to facts and experts, and the prduction values were excellent. 2 hours of enthralling oil and climate-related topicality.

See it. Spread it. It's important stuff.

I joined this site specifically to encourage the virality of the program. And no, I do not work for A&E Networks.

There's a thread about this show in the Current Energy News section. It includes a link where it can be viewed online. (Legally! It's originally an Australian documentary, and ABC Australia put it online.)

From a young American fresh off a viewing...this program is simply excellent (I knew, based on the topicality and lack of BS, that it wasn't a History Channel original). I actually emailed A&E to tell them how good I thought it was. I follwed that by joining this site. So, hey everybody.

The dinos are a little silly, but it is attention-grabbing. A&E should push this thing. ABC should as well. So should the members of this site. I really think it could resonate with a general audience.

Just my two pennies.

Definitely a good show for people will little knowledge about the industry.

the part I liked the most was the history of how global warming could have caused the creation of oil and that might be what the world is working towards again.

I think what you are talking about is the part where they say that the hot CO2-rich primordial climate conditions in which the small lifeforms that created oil dominated would be recreated by burning all their fossilized remains, and wind up wiping out higher life forms in the process. Full circle as it were.

If there is one documentary to show family and friends about PO/GW, this is it.
