 This year I vow to not unintentionally celebrate anachronistic Roman holidays. For example, I will not ritually sacrifice a ram to Janus, divom deus. I will not ask Him for blessings over my doors, gates, portals, and hinges. I will not ask the priests of Janus to open the Gates of War to release world peace. I will not ask Him for good fortune in the following year, or before beginning any important endeavor, or invoke Him or His Holy Day upon making resolutions... oops.

Pretty norse, there.
Ok I won't do Janus days or holidays either, save some money, no more christmas. Good idea. If we would just get rid of all junk bought on xmas, we could cut our oil use 10%

I hate to be pedantic, but the gates of the Temple of Janus were in fact closed in times of peace and open in times of war.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'J')anus (jā'nus) [key], in Roman religion, god of beginnings. He was one of the principal Roman gods, the custodian of the universe. The first hour of the day, the first day of the month, the first month of the year (which bears his name) were sacred to him. His chief function was as guardian deity of gates and doors. The gates of his temple in the Roman Forum were closed in time of peace and opened in time of war. Janus was usually represented with two bearded heads placed back to back so that he might look in two directions at the same time. His principal festival was celebrated on the first day of the year.

Yes, closed in times of peace, open in times of war. The oldest descriptions indicate that the gates would be opened up during war so that Janus would leave the temple and bring peace. During times of peace the gates would be closed, as there was no peace-bringing work to be done.

It's confusing like an electrical circuit, where closed means on and open means off, except opposite. Over time, the Romans themselves forgot whether the gates enclosed peace, or enclosed war. In practice, the gates were opened and closed with little relation to the actual state of war.

Perhaps in order to secure world peace we should rededicate the Dome on the Rock to Janus, build new gates, open them, and wait for Janus to do his thing?

The New Year Thread

Unread postby Schneider » Mon 31 Dec 2007, 19:06:15

Oh well..

The new year is only hours away..I decided to not go to any party or familial event..nope,here is my personal program : Eat a good meal and drink beer !

The meal : Delicious pork with garlic saussages with sliced potatos cooked in butter and with nice mix of onions/mushrooms..

All this with a ice cold Corona beer ! I'll finish with a nice slice of sugar pie ..

Why? From various reasons know by all here,2008 seem to be headed for a VERY rough year..I say,it's better to forget peakoil for a few hours and enjoy this time of plenty !

So..may you have a happy new year meal like i'n just about to have :) !

Oh darn..Even knowing what is coming..HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR 2008 !!! Know that you're not alone..

I'm making split pea soup right now (sort of a tradition for us for New Year's and something DH loves). Later we're going to my daughter's boyfriend's house to meet his parents for the first time. Should be fun.

Happy New Year to you too!

Gonna get my dancin' shoes on and head out for a square dance north of Hamilton with the missus. Hee haw!

I'd even have a few beers if I could, but the square dancing world are teetotalers, well, at least at the dances. They're kind of... square. :-D

Happy New Year, and enjoy what's left of peak oil!

I have already had a few beers and plan to see the dawn of the year – at dawn.

The thing is, none here have forecast the future with much accuracy as far as I have seen, so rumors of mankind’s imminent demise seem somewhat exaggerated at this point.

So have a good time tonight and Good Luck to us all in the New Year!

Invited to dinner at some friends', who knows what they'll serve but it will be GOOD.

PS out here in God's Country the term "lunch" is illegal. It's Breakfast, Dinner, Supper.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PonyBoy78', 'I') have no shotgun, and I kinda want one.
My partner is getting a solar oven. Pricey - but it's also a pretty utilitarian choice. :P

Pricey? It shouldn't be. Just get some plans off the net and build your own...it's not that hard to do.
Building / making gifts is definitely the way to go for holiday gift-giving...another idea is to limit shopping to thrift stores, yard sales, Craigslist, etc.
Anything you folks can do to say out of the malls and chain store this coming season will be *highly appreciated*. :-D

Re: 2008 Yule or Christmas or whatever you call it.

Unread postby hippiema1 » Mon 07 Jul 2008, 09:35:12

For reasons that had nothing to do with peak oil, we've been handmaking almost all the presents we give for years. For almost my whole life, I've started knitting presents for the next year on Dec. 26.
Our 9yo son doesn't watch tv or have video games or anything like that. He asked for a hand-cranked grain mill for his birthday.... Ah, sometimes having a weird kid is a really really good thing.

Now we feel really lucky that we have those very plain traditions. Wish we were prepared in all the other ways. Hm.
I think I am going to ask for a rigid heddle loom for my holiday present. It is something that will bring me joy, help me make future presents, and also potentially have a useful skill for the future.

My husband is asking for a rain barrel system for his birthday.
What else should we put on our list?

I think I am going to ask for a couple of books on sustainable agriculture. And the parents, sister and gf are going to get some of that as well. Suits them, having a nutcase like me around.
