One way to informally survey is, look at how many people are carrying bags. That's why the big stores have their name on the bag, it's like a walking billboard.

Sometimes you can see a lot of people but they're not buying much, just looking around, maybe buying a few small things, necessities.

There was a good discussion on another site about this, how people may just spend their gift cards on necessities, so the gift cards don't add extra sales, they're just used for stuff people would buy anyway.

I saw a lot of people buying gift cards yesterday (we call vouchers) and it was busier than before christmas but still not as bad as I've known it. I usually get feelings of panic in shopping centres but not yesterday, just irritation.
