So I swore at an elderly nun today....

Unread postby Loki » Fri 21 Dec 2007, 01:33:01

I'm riding my bike home from work tonight as usual. Happy as a clam---planted a bunch of trees today, was told my job may become permanent, and now I have a few days off and am thinking about the beer I'm gonna drink. Suddenly I see a car turn from a stop just as I'm passing in front of it, even though I clearly had the legal right of way. Time slows and I see what's about to happen in excruciating detail. I yell at the driver and jerk hard to the left, but she turns into me and hits me. I'm off my bike and my shoulder suddenly hurts like hell. I drag my bike to the curb and walk briskly to the car. I don't generally get scared in such situations, just very very very pissed off. Not an adrenaline rush, just extremely angry and extremely focused.

But out comes this little old lady. OK, not going to touch her obviously. I just say in a rather coarse tone that she "fucked up" my shoulder and that I have to "dig holes and shit" for a living. I didn't call her any names or refer to her age, but I was obviously not happy. She didn't seem all that shaken up at first, but I later realized that she was actually pretty upset, but was good at hiding it. We exchange information and I calm down. She mentions she's a freaking nun. A freaking nun. I say "I'm sorry for cursing, sister." I'm a hardcore atheist, but I actually kind of like the clergy, especially the Catholics.

Bike is OK. Some light paint marks, but it didn't bend anything. I'm thinking my shoulder will get better in a week or two. It basically got jerked too far when her car pushed my handle bars to the extreme left. I've had worse injuries doing judo, but this is the first time I've ever been hit by a car. I'm also not as young as I used to be. And now my back is aching more than it should after planting a few trees. That asshole god, sending his minions after me just because I don't believe in him and spell his name with a lowercase....

So what should I do? Go to the doctor to get a paper record? I watch enough Judge Judy to know that's what the legal system would like me to do. I have very basic health insurance, but no desire to make use of it. If I do have long-term problems, will it be held against me if I don't go to the doctor? I very much doubt there is anything positive they would do for me. As I've said, at this point it just feels like a typical judo or weightlifting injury, many of which I've shaken off before. But I don't want to get screwed in the long run, especially by an elderly nun.

I have to say you need to get to the doctor, just to get checked out. She is a Nun and has protection and insurance and I seem to remember the Catholics running a large number of hospitals.

If you do manual labor and are getting older you damn well better get your situation sorted out about the accident.

I had an injury not long ago and had to miss some work it is not fun let me tell you.

The sister will get over the cussing, she has heard much worse I am sure.

Get well soon and load up on Ibuprofen if you do not have any problems taking it. Take 800 mg 4 over the counter tabs every 8 hours and do it like clock work at that dose it will reduce inflammation and is really a wonder drug imho. You may still have some pain but it is the best stuff you can take.

God speed your recovery. :) of course he is the guy that did it.

If the lady has car insurance, I assume they would cover all your medical bills, probably buy you a new bike and give you a couple grand for your troubles.

Atleast that's what happened to me. I was actually fine and wasn't looking for anything but the Insurance company was jonesin' to settle with me so they gave me 2K and bought me a new bike.

She said she was covered by what sounded like some Catholic insurance plan. I could very definitely use the money, but I honestly have zero desire to cash in. I'd just as soon forget about it, as long as my shoulder agrees. I'd really prefer not to deal with a gawdamn doctor or a gawdamn insurance company or a gawdamn government agency.

Now if it was some asshole in a Hummer, my opinion may be a little different....

human + car = monster
little old lady + car = monster
Saintly little old lady who bakes cookies for the poor + car = monster
Actual real-live nun (maybe can even fly) + car = monster

any questions?

Yeah, get it checked out by a doc. You may be glad you did years from now.

You should go to the doctor. What if you're still not fit when you have to go back to work? Best play it safe.

This what her insurance policy is for (if there is anything to pay).

First, have your shoulder looked at immediately. You never know.

Then, like a minute later, phone her insurance company. Tell them what happened. They'll probably be wanting this to 'go away' and will slide you some $$ to get you to disappear.

Do this Friday morning. Skip work. You have a good excuse. You're going to make way more $$ skipping work anyhow. Let someone else dig the holes in the ground for a change.

It won't have any effect on the nun (unless this is crash #4, or something like that) , it'll be only you and her insurance company.

Loki, get it checked out. Even thought I doubt you willl be working much next week (Xmas holiday and all, I am sure the business will take a few days off).
It sucks when you obtain an injury and it isn't your fault. You need to get it checked out.
Here's what happened to me, and I was in a car. I was taking someone home from the hospital, and I was in rush-hour traffic. (Chicago suburbs, fairly busy). Someone was talking on the telephone, and stepped on the wrong pedal. I was AT THE RED LIGHT STANDING STILL and I still got hit. The first impact was 4 cars behind us, and it hit us as we were standing still.
I did not feel bad in the first hour or two, but my ex took me to the hospital, as I began to feel "off". What happened is the impact broke a blood vessel around the base of my skull, near my neck on the left side.
For most of the summer, I felt as if I was living in a gyroscope. It affected my appetite, as I was nauseous most of the time till my broken blood vessels healed. Homeopathic meds helped somewhat, but I had to lay down a lot, with a cool towel on my head for a few weeks. I do NOT want to go through that again.

The lady was very sorry, she was speaking to her husband who was a doctor. She was coming home from work, and not focused on driving/cell phone conversation. Was this nun on the cellphone?

There were 4 cars involved in this bangup, as she hit the cars with so much force, we were forced into the next car up. There were cars on the side of us on the street, parked, so there was no "empty" spot for any of us to go to.

Allstate was very good, gave me something for the car damage, and reimbursed my health insurance for the injury. (in essence, I never saw any of that money, one insurance company cuts the other one a check.) However, I *Had* to sign off on any further claim of money from this accident. In reality, I didn't know if that broken blood vessel situation would have resolved itself. It did, but since then, I have been hit by...get this..4 other people talking on the phone whilst driving the car.

I am not saying that you should go after her because the Catholic church has money, but you should definitely not roll over just because you can, folks count on that all the time, and then where does that leave YOU? HER negligence caused the accident, and driving is a responsibility. If it was dark, and you had no reflective gear on your bike, you may be partly to blame too.

But I think you need to see a doctor and assure yourself of the extent of something. Sometimes a hairline fracture exists and you don't know right away. NOW is the time to do something NOT LATER ON. The law is on your side right now. USE IT. Don't whine later on if you lose the feeling in your arm or if it's a hairline fracture that works it's way into something worse due to the rigors of your job. (and you injure it due to ignoring the problems).
She owes you a doctor's "OK" at the very least, and an x-ray or two. If you get the "all clear" then it's gravy, she's learned to maybe not drive anymore, or at night/dusk, and you've gotten an EQUITABLE settlement.

There is NOTHING ethically wrong in wanting that.

What if she is elderly and has hit you, but kills the next person, or hits a mother/child crossing a street? Did you think of that? Maybe her order/Mother Superior needs to evaluate this situation too, she may be a liability for her Order. You may be doing the whole situation a favor. PLEASE think about that!

Blu
PS Glad to hear that you will have a permanent situation at that nursery! (per our other thread.)

Glad to hear you survived your run in with religion. Get it checked out, even if all you get is peace of mind, she'd identify with that. Hope you feel better soon.

I went through this same sort of thing a couple years ago, after injuring my back at work. It was a tricky case, because the symptoms of my injury started in my knees, and didn't show up in my back until a month or so later. At 24, I was still used to just shrugging everything off, so I tried to work around my injury and didn't bother taking my piece from the system. I was a happy worker... until about six or so weeks later, when the pain really hit my back and I realized that I would, for the first time, not be shrugging things off.

Half a dozen letters and several interviews later, the insurance company still wouldn't even help me pay my physiotherapy appointments. In the end, the arbiter for my appeal actually sincerely told me that he believed my story but that our public insurance company policy wouldn't allow him to cover my case.

Things get VERY complicated when you don't start leaving a paper trail from the beginning, so take care of this just in case. I still can't handle full-time, manual labour, which I love doing.

I tree-planted, too. Great job. It only took me a little over a week to get into the zone, putting me not too far behind the real highballers, even with this other greener getting away with creaming me out! I ended up going back to the city before my first summer ended though, after getting a good job with my city's public works department. ;)

You might want to file an accident report, too, to help with the paper trail. You never know what kind of proof you might need that the accident really happened, although it might be too late for an accident report.

Actually she probably hit you on purpose. Those Catholics have a little game they call "Heathen hit and run." But seriously, sue that crusty old bitch... she owes you money for the trouble she caused you. I would have called her every name in the book... yes, even the c-word.

Thanks for the replies all. You convinced me to the go to the doctor. I just got back. She thinks I just have a rotator cuff strain, not a tear. Based on previous injuries I've had, I think she's probably right. I'm hoping to be back to normal in a couple weeks. Luckily I won't have much physical labor at work in the next couple weeks.

That was the first time I've been to the doctor in more than 10 years---I've been to the emergency room twice in the last 16 years to get stitches, but that's it. The doc was quite the cutie---if all doctors looked like her, I'd probably become a hypochondriac. Hopefully another one of god's minions will hit me with a car again so I can go back and see that doctor. :)

I'll call the police about filing an after-the-fact accident report. I didn't have my phone on me at the time, otherwise I would have called then and there. I'll also call her insurance and tell them I'll settle for a life-size statue of Jesus, made of pure gold of course.

Your choice, friend. You might be right. It may be nothing. If you choose not to go to the doctor, you take the risk onto yourself. If it does turn into something--which it could, considering what you do for a living--then you will have trouble filing a claim, and you will have no one to blame but yourself.

On the other hand, if you think there is any chance at all you might end up needing your insurance, go to the doc and inform your insurance company.

We live in a f'ed up place, where going to a doctor is so expensive, even with insurance, that we'd rather just take our chances.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Loki', 'B')ut I don't want to get screwed in the long run, especially by an elderly nun.
I know I angered you way back when, and I'm sorry. That said, this is an interesting tale. I do hope you'll be OK. 'run' and 'nun' heh heh. That's some clever rhyming.

I honestly have zero recollection what we might have argued about. So no worries. And I guess I'm a poet and didn't know it.

If nothing else, this little episode was a nice wake up call. Our lives can be snuffed out in an instant, totally unexpectedly. My father was killed by a drunk driver when he was almost exactly my age. I won't be surprised if I also don't see 40.

Just goes to show that we should grab life by the balls and twist while we have the chance....
