$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PenultimateManStanding', 'I')'ll try for a little while to keep this thread going. Then I'll give up.

Jump Into The Fire

Little Green Bag

Ok, now remember, this thread is mostly about great unknown musicians.

If you follow jazz, you have to notice that the Scandinavians are running the musical football into the end zone frequently now with a whole lot of imagination and skill.

Although it's not Christmas music, Rigmor's CD Alone Together is a great collection to play at Christmas for a bunch of diverse people. Very warm and friendly, kinda sexy too.

Ok, but how many here have ever heard of Tim Hardin? That Don't Make Promises song is a gem. Besides that, this thread will be forgotten like the rest if somebody, anybody, doesn't keep it going.

It's pretty obvious that we can't keep a music thread going here. Bye bye music thread in the OF. Here's the swan song. Don't Be Cruel

Wow, SCF, that was pretty good. I'm glad you like Bill Frisell. When I heard Variations On A Theme I thought, "wow, this guy I got to hear more of."

There are unknowns who are excellent and then there are greats who aren't played on top-40 any more so no one's heard of them any more, and I'd like to nominate Django Reinhardt as probably the one having the highest ratio of kick-ass playing and utter obscurity at least within the Empire (they probably know about him fine over in europe).

I'd never heard of here but apparently she's a rage across the pond.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Wiki', 'K')etevan "Katie" Melua (Georgian: ქეთევან "ქეთი" მელუა, surname pronounced[help] [ˈmeluˌɑː]; born 16 September 1984) is a British-Georgian singer, songwriter and musician. She was born in the Georgian SSR, but moved to Northern Ireland at the age of eight and then relocated to England at the age of 14.[2] Melua is signed to the small Dramatico record label, under the management of songwriter Mike Batt,[3] and made her musical debut in 2003. In 2006, she was the United Kingdom's biggest-selling female artist[4] and Europe's highest selling European female artist.[5]

In November 2003, at the age of 19, Melua released her first album, Call off the Search, which reached the top of the United Kingdom album charts and sold 1.8 million copies in its first five months of release.[6] Her second album, Piece by Piece, was released in September 2005 and to date has gone platinum four times...

Good day from Pheba, from the farm:
I do not know if this is an unknown. Most folks I talk to about his music do not know about him. Robert Mirabal is Native American. His music is awesome. His cd: "Music From A Painted Cave" is fantastic.
One of my favorite Mirabal songs is "1000 miles". If you go to youtube and type in 1000 miles the song should come up.
The song is about a Native American who is laying in a hotel room, sick and dying. These are his last words. Awesome.
Some of the film clips do not match the song, but the song is great. There is also a youtube that is just titled robert mirabal. The song on this one is called "Little Indians". He writes his own material, and the lyrics of his songs really get to me.
Have a pleasant day.
Pheba.

Thanks for the nice words PMS and Plants. I find it hard to believe that was nearly 18 years ago! Just when I've been trumpeting how I've retired, I got talked into a New Years Day gig at the Norfolk Tavern in Port Dover, Ontario. I guess I better get practicing.......

On Topic...

Any of you folks steel guitar fans?

Check out Kayton Roberts sometime. I saw him play here locally one night at a hall in a small town as he was passing through. This guy plays a lap steel better than some play pedal steel!

Lets keep this thread above water...

Yeah, Stephane Grapelli. I was taking violin lessons and renting a fiddle. Of course the implosion of my biz and my life meant I had to return it, and as for the lessons, I could have done as well watching Yehudi Menuhin's videos he did for the BBC in the 60s.

I found the violin not too hard, and it's small and easy to carry - you get a lot of sound out of that little box. Easy on the hands too.

But, no money for one now if I want to try playing some of those riffs.

I was looking at stuff on playing the musical saw today .... the present God of the musical saw is a professional orchestra oboe player, so he's a GOOD musician, who picked up the saw. He's just using a Stanley from the hardware store, nothing special - even still says Stanley on the side.

I know they'd go apeshit over a good saw player out here. It astounds me that Santa Cruz has a statue of a saw player there but NO SAW PLAYER you'd think the place would be thick with 'em.

Saw, theremin, violin. voice - you have to know where you are and if you're sharp or flat - apparently that's a hell of a filter which most can't get through.

OK a FUN band too many people are forgetting, Man OR Astro-Man? Look up on YouTube, "Theme From EEVIAC" and "9 Volt" great stuff!

Check out Billy Kilson's drum solo on "What Goes Around". Last song on the bottom. Download button is on the far right of every track. Start listening about 9:30 minutes into it.

Also, you can snag some of Kurt Rosenwinkel's CD "Heartcore" here. He's a NY guitarist known for his complex chords and novel songs. "Heartcore" has been called "trippy", ande I can see why... but it's a new kind of trippy. Try some.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PenultimateManStanding', 'T')he Dave Holland Quartet reference reminded me of Charles Mingus

btw, keeping a thread alive in the OF is not as easy as it is in the HOF.

Here's some more vintage Mingus

I checked out the Mingus stuff. Very impressive. I may have to go out and pick some up.

I love that "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" song. I first heard that song on Jeff Becks Blow by Blow album.

Wow she's incredible. I've heard her before on this tune:

PMS the Garnet Mimms is over the top cool! Wow folks keep the links coming I'm really enjoying this thread, getting turned on to music I've never heard or haven't heard enough.

Cry Baby was coverd by Janis Joplin, I believe, but this original version is extremely cool.

Yes it is. My gratitude goes out to him and many others. Gale Garnett made my heart sing when I was ten years old. I still love that song all these years later. It's a disturbing message. And I have no idea why she wanted to present it.

Manifest Nexto Me

www.myspace.com/manifestnextome

a fairly energetic subconscious psychedelic indie trip-hop band that dabbles in the realm of metaphysically hopeful yet realistically apocalyptic music. i highly suggest

one lyricaly quote

"who brought the sting of the black magic, who put the sadness in the last chapter"
