mercurygirl,

I think being a feudal landlord would bring out some of my more tyrannical and corrupt tendencies but you would be more than welcome to farm an acre or two for a proportion of your bounty.

See, I've started already.

Alright, as long as there is a contract with an escape clause, in case you get too tyrannical. We'll keep you in eggs, blackberry jam, and potatoes, no problem.

')Any learned thoughts on the matter would be welcome. We really are thinking very seriously about this move but it's also causing a lot of angst...[/i]

I would agree on possible transitions, but if you're strong and brave...why not?

I suppose you're already doing research, but perhaps some histories of the isles? It seems to me I've read here and there about the old ways of living in those remote places.

Angst will always be with us and you're certainly not alone there. It's all up to what you feel capable of and from your postings, you ought to do well. You were in a rural area in France and acclimated well, didn't you? Anything you found difficult about that or could be about the proposed home?
I'm sure you're thinking a great deal of your kids and their future...what kind of input are you getting from them?

Thanks mercurygirl,

Yea we certainly have learned some lessons from our time here - the main mistakes (which I'm happy to pass on because we can all make these) were not checking on soil type (to sticky to work by hand) and taking on a semi-ruin. The latter mistake has potentially cost us dear as the house has taken 4 years to rennovate & still isn't finished!

Strangely enough, Scotland was the original 'Plan A' (my wife freaked out about the climate so we ended up going South instead) - so I've got some research done already (grin). Although it's never enough without actually going there to live for a while, hence the angst...

The kids at the moment aren't involved in the decision-making process - it would put them right off their school studies if they knew they weren't going to be speaking French next year. Tough, but fair, I think...

JP, I just happened across this and immediately thought of you. I don't know if it would suit your needs, but it sure is interesting.

Hi mercurygirl,

Thanks!

This is good input - my (long suffering) wife & I have been talking a lot recently about how we can do our little hair-shirt thing back in Britain. Plus bring the kids up without the i-pod sketch. A remote Scottich island seems like a perfect solution. In Peak Oil-UK terms, it IS the perfect solution.

I had a very cosy chat with my wife a few nights ago & she turned to me & said, you know, John, I can see us in ten years time, you with your beloved tractor in bits & pieces all over the yard, me with a great big grey bundle of hair down my back, dried fish all over the workshop & grandchildren pulling seaweed in from the beach with a determined expression on their their little faces.

I said, "I hope so. I really do."

Anyhow (back to reality) in the mean-time, there is a large bridge to cross from here to there. But I am also old enough to have figured out that my wife is usually right so we will see (grin).

Only thing that worries me about the Brit. Isles is there are some theorizing that global warming could cause the gulf stream to weaken or stop altogether , they say that this would , in turn cause the Isles to suffer their own little ice-age . Something about the deep water recycling of the melting greenland ice shelf interrupting the current . Since it seems the timeline and severity of global warming gets shorter and darker every time there's a new study , you might want to take this into account.
Perhaps the population would be less swayed to socialism if we had fewer examples of socialism from our "Free Market Capitalists". -----fiddler dave

Hi jboogy,

Thanks for the input. Yea, I'm worried about this but at the moment things are OK. Take the Gulf Stream away & Scotland will freeze - I know this.

But what's a poor man to do? Myself, and two of our three children have a condition called Asperger's Syndrome. It's not a life-threatening condiition but it basically means we're not able to deal with high-stress situations.

I do the best I can, for myself, & for my children. That's it, basically. Whatever happens, happens, pleuggh....

Yeah , kids are the wildcard . If I didn't have kids I'd be livin' like I did in my early twenties, go w/ the flow , whichever way the wind blows me , etc. The conundrum is I want to do what's best for the future of my children , but the mere presence of my children and all the possessions that accompany that lifestyle make it more difficult for me to just up and go wherever may be the utopia du jour. If it was just me I'd probably be living in my sister's garage and hangin' under the El Jobean bridge all day fishin' and drinkin'.

But ah, you're right. You, me, my cousin's boat, a crate of beer & nothing but two weeks of, 'click.... sphgghhhh...' in other words, fishin'...

It's always good to dream....(grin)

Only problem with the blast shelter is that it's on a 1/8 acre lot. I personally have a hard time seeing sustainable living on 1/8 acre.

Likewise the Bantry Bay property is beautiful, but 2,000,000 euros for 32 acres? Yipe!

Of a thousand burning bridges
Sifting through the ashes every day
What we thought would never end
Now is nothing more than a memory
The way things were before
I lost my way" - OCMS
