Sorry for the trivial content but I was idly browsing around the web for the ideal PO refuge & found the ultimate bug-out! Read the descriptions - you just gotta love Esate Agents...

Ex Royal Observer Corps. Nuclear Bunker Kildonan, Isle Of Arran

Yours for just £25k...

Image

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')FEATURES:

Beautiful location
Spectacular views
Historicaly interesting property

This interesting property is located on the outskirts of the beautiful village of Kildonan and is a unique piece of Arran’s social history. At ground level all that is visible are the raised entrance hatch, the ventilation shaft and the brick aircraft observation building. The accommodation section of the bunker is located about 6 metres underground and measures approximately 5.43 metres by 2.27 metres and it comprises a living/bedroom and separate toilet area.

That is awesome, what a view. I noticed the fun little graphic of the happy family underground while a mushroom cloud appears. Not much land, sadly, although extremely remote.

Do you still reckon on leaving France, JPL?

Sigh, yes, I am leaving. The plans I made 7 years ago are looking very dated. I did the best I could figure at the time but it appears that events are going out of control and instead of running away from Peak Oil I have run straight into it (groan).

Current plans are to sell everything, load up the farm tools, the children, the tractor, the seed collection, the cats, the wind-up radio, my 70's sci-fi novels and everything else(!) into a big lorry and get as far away from civilisation as we can.

We are now looking at the Scottish Islands. Arron, Skye, Lewis, are first choices. IF (& it's a big IF) we can get enough for the farm here in France we can hit the ground running and start planting again.

I didn't want things to work out this way but I have to look after my children first.

Sorry to hear that. Not sure what has happened to you guys there, it sounded like a good place.

The Scottish Isles, OTOH, sound lovely. Can you live on taties and seaweed? How does one make a living there I wonder.

Best of luck!

Oh the usual sketch, I expect. Tractor spares, home-brew, ripping-off the tourists & cash-economy. To add spice, the odd artist, tarot-card reader, village drunks & teen-age Goths with no-where to go.

Taties on request & rain everywhere....

People in sea-side communities are all mad anyhow (read John Steinbeck) but at least I will be going home - after a fashion - & in good (blurrble blurrble) company.

Will keep y'all posted about how things work out...

Hey, I was a tourist all over the Hebrides, I like the terrain over there. Skye was great, and the B&Bs were a bargain. That was a while ago though. As long as the gulf stream stays put it would be a great place to be I think. Lots of nice sheep too.

Boss digs, JPL. Norteno Americanos might jump for some of the crash pads over at misslebases.com. Really. Perfect place to park your Minuteman II!

Cheers dino, yea, Skye is first choice right now. I grew up in a seaside village in Cornwall & I figure Skye is going to be pretty similar. (I would go back to Cornwall but the land prices are eye-popping).

Only one obsacle for the mo' - the wife. She's not too keen on my bright ideas right now(!) but she is PO-aware so I think I can sell her the benefits of an island retreat. Watch this space...

I understand the wife thing JPL. Mine is still at best on board 50/50. She was horrified that I brought her back to Poland, but having recently been back to the states and Canada, I think she is giving me a few more points. Up to 55/45. If nothing else, I am trying to pitch it to her as the ultimate stress relief.

the Isle of Arran thing looks good to me! At least as a summer cottage sort of thing. Hunting/fishing/foraging must be good, the seaweed would be "dulse" which I think is Scottish for "delicious".

Go into town once a month, farmer's market or something, to do your buying and sell stuff or something to meet your cash needs, not bad.

The thing is to get out to the edges of whatever Empire dominates your area, this area would do fine.

MadPaddy,

You are already in a 'happy' place in comparison to the rest of the world. Once all the investors/movers/shakers go elsewhere your beautiful green isle (with less than 5 million population) will return to its humble roots. Stay put, hold on. Educate those around you by example. I would only be sweating if I was in Dublin and heavily invested in the market (real estate/investing/business in general).

Cheers...

Yea the Scottish islands will get cut-off first from the UK mainland if things get tough. Also expect a rough and fairly short transition to 'true' self-sufficiency. BUT - that might also be our salvation - that's what I'm thinking.

Any learned thoughts on the matter would be welcome. We really are thinking very seriously about this move but it's also causing a lot of angst...

JP

Edit: Yea, to explain, the fallout shelter was just a bit of forum-fun, what we are really considering is taking on an island croft with a few acres & sea-frontage - just to clarify.

I would agree on possible transitions, but if you're strong and brave...why not?

I suppose you're already doing research, but perhaps some histories of the isles? It seems to me I've read here and there about the old ways of living in those remote places.

Angst will always be with us and you're certainly not alone there. It's all up to what you feel capable of and from your postings, you ought to do well. You were in a rural area in France and acclimated well, didn't you? Anything you found difficult about that or could be about the proposed home?
I'm sure you're thinking a great deal of your kids and their future...what kind of input are you getting from them?
