Yes, thats why I think preparing for the TSHTF is pointless for most people. The best to hope for is a swift and relatively painless death.

But I dont think a quick collapse is the most likely option on the cards, rather a slow decline where a lot of middle class people will join the ranks of the poor and a lot of the poor will go destitute; like the poor of the 3rd world currently.

But Industrial society will survive in a form and there still will be need for specialists of some sort or another; albeit a much lower number than now and at a lower pay and a standard of living, but still better off than the new masses of poor.

I think the key to maintain your middle class status is to maintain your employability in an economic crisis; there will still be need for doctors, lawyers, engineers, and that is something one can work towards; unlike a collapse of society, which most people alive today will not be able to cope with.
