Fine Kids

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Thu 15 Nov 2007, 00:05:47

I finished up today with a week and a half of Chemistry kids. There was this girl with a soft low voice who kept asking me questions. I could never make out what she was saying because of my deafness. There were others who understood and asked me with a loud voice. That girl with the soft voice did come up to me on the last day and asked to see my hearing aid. Others had told her to have some respect. My skill in lecturing is second to none, my interactive skills are pretty bad. So I showed her my hearing aid and mentioned how I read lips. These kids were so sweet. I gave them lectures in Chemistry that don't condescend. Even the best High School teachers lecture in a condescending manner. I treat them as if they were in College.

I had to confront the laughter in period 5. It had something to with my disability. That crops up from time to time. A strong ego comes in handy because I have to be stoic and accept my humiliation. That seems to be part of why these teenagers respond so favorably to me. That I can do that.

Hi, PMS. It sounds like you have spent many rewarding hours with your students. I also have known quite a number of fine kids, by association with my own sons and daughter and through volunteer work at their schools. I find that when I approach a group of kids expecting the best from my exchange with them, that is what I get.

Did I ever tell you about the time I had to student-teach a couple of grade 11 foods classes? This was a long time ago, when I was studying to be a teacher. I was only a couple of years older than the students. Well, the morning class were a bunch of budding cooks and the afternoon class more interested in food fights. It was a crash course for me in learning how to deal with two completely different sets of dynamics.

In my school, no one takes that seriously - other than the whole eating food part.

I'm glad you had a good experience PMS, were you loosing hope in our education system, and the future?

No, i've been too busy to do drugs that people give me, let alone drugs I have to find.

But i'll probably get my hands on some during christmas break or something, when I have time. Or maybe not.
Being underage and all, the drug market can be very very fickle.

This kid from Wisconsin should post more than he does. I discussed peak oil with a kid the other day. He wanted me to go and discuss it with his history teacher. And furthermore, he was astounded that he hadn't heard about it. It's the biggest story in history and it isn't getting out.
