Those options are all as useless as tits on a bull, from a peak oil perspective. From what I've seen of English Majors and their bizarro litcrit theories, this course would have every chance of making you
stupider, and at great expense! Going into debt, (or merely missing a few years of full-time work,) in order to pursue something you're not really sure about, (and which has questionable eventual benefits,) doesn't sound ideal really. While I certainly believe in the benefits of gaining more & more knowledge and understanding, (PO or not,) I fail to see how colleges have any sort of monopoly on this process. They do have a monopoly on handing out magic sheepskins, but their magic has largely worn off. A generic liberal arts type degree gets you nowhere as often as it gets you anywhere. But reading lots of books, and reading lots of net, and writing on the net in order to improve your thinking processes... these are very worthwhile hobbies.
If you have
any doubts, then
listen to them!
If i was you, (or if I had my time again,)
I would defer for a year, (at least)
get an ok-paying job no-one else wants -( eg nightshift sanitary bin disposalist,)
live frugally, (maybe with parents?)
read and write as much as you're inclined, (maybe read some of those textbooks to see if you're really missing anything)
save as much money as possible,
and each month invest the money in the
goddamn obvious peak oil stocks - i.e. Cameco the uranium bluechip and Canadian Oil Sands Trust.
After a year you'll have a new set of experiences, something of a financial foundation, (which will seriously kaching when PO hits,) and with your own studying you'll be able to trounce the other freshmen if you decide to go that way next year. Also you'll have probably a better idea of what you want to go on to study, and thus reduce the risk of wasting precious years chopping and changing courses and majors like lots of students do. There's no time for wasting time "finding yourself" at college i.e. partying lots and making a half-hearted effort at some course which will likely lead nowhere and which wasn't quite what the brochures made it out to be. There's no reason why you can't expand your mind, dress like a clown and get drunk & laid quite often...ALL WITHOUT COLLEGE.
And be on the lookout for other interesting but non-academic courses with a short turn around and with good economic prospects, eg, like a one year course on locksmithing, or doodad installation or whatever. Drifting into college because it's the done thing stands every chance of being a waste of time these days, whereas getting some $ together and putting it in the right places will definately not be a waste of time. Quite the contrary.
Hope I don't sound harsh, and maybe my 2 cents worth isn't what you're wanting to hear. But do give it some thought. Sometimes the best course of action is the opposite of what we've been lead to believe.
