The United Arab Emirates may end the dirham's 30-year-old peg to the dollar and link it instead to a basket of currencies, central bank Governor Sultan Bin Nasser al- Suwaidi said.

That point of view seems to gaining currency lately. Here is another reference to similiar comments.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he United Arab Emirates has reached a
``crossroads'' in its policy of pegging the dirham to the dollar
as the U.S. currency weakens, Reuters reported, citing the
governor of the central bank, Sultan Bin Nasser al-Suwaidi.

``We have reached a crossroads now with a further
deterioration in the U.S. dollar and expected further weakening of
the U.S. economy,'' Reuters cited al-Suwaidi as saying at a speech
in Tokyo today.

The U.A.E. has no plans to drop the peg alone and any
decision will be made by the Gulf Cooperation Council ``at the
right time,'' Reuters reported al-Suwaidi as saying.

The Gulf Cooperation Council is an economic and political
grouping of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar,
Oman and Bahrain. They all peg their currencies to the dollar,
apart from Kuwait, which switched to a basket of currencies in
May.

The organized state is a wonderful invention whereby everyone can live at someone else's expense.
