U.S. drilling potential

Unread postby diemos » Thu 01 Nov 2007, 16:35:22

Many areas of the US are currently off-limits to drilling. If we were to throw open all of those areas what are the reserves and the peak production we could expect to get from them? The right usually points to these restrictions as the factor that is limiting our energy independence. I wonder if you could even replace our imports for a short time with this plan.

That would be pretty machivellian and comical if the U.S. went " hey check this out we got plenty of oil and used all yours up" . By the way oil is 400 a barrel payable in gold or silver till the trade imbalance is gone. Then it will be 398.50 a barrel + shipping and handling so make that 498 a barrel with a 2 dollar discount for favorite trading partners :-D

Well no one knows for sure becuase they havn't drilled there, however, the following quote is from the NPC report.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')or various reasons, access to some domestic energy resources has become restricted. In the United States, an estimated 40 billion barrels of technically recoverable oil resources are either completely off-limits or are subject to significant lease restrictions. These resources are evenly split between onshore and offshore
locations, as shown in Figure ES-11. Similar restrictions apply to more than 250 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Another estimated 11 billion barrels of oil resources and 51 trillion cubic feet of natural gas resources are restricted in Canada. Advancements in technology and operating practices may now be able to alleviate the environmental concerns that originally contributed to some of these access restrictions.

So, 40 billion barrels or 5 years of current consumption.

Yup, that's gonna save us. All we have to do is get those damn tree huggers out of the way and nirvana is assured.

ANWAR is supposedly 372 years of consumption for the state of New Hampshire.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Chesire', 'T')hat would be pretty machivellian and comical if the U.S. went " hey check this out we got plenty of oil and used all yours up".

The correct endgame strategy for using up a finite resource can be summed up as:

Burn their oil now.
Save your oil for later.

I'm sure the right wingers would hate to admit it but the environmentalists are helping the US to follow the correct geopolitical strategy. Ensuring that we're saving that oil for when we really need it. And just so we're clear, as long as there is even a single hummer driving 100 miles back and forth to work each day, we don't need it. As long as there are restaurants with heated outdoor patios, we don't need it.

Someday our descendants will look back in horror at the ways in which we squandered this inheritance.
