$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Revi', 'A') million evacuated! Is that one of the biggest evacuations ever? How many were evacuated from New Orleans?
In the day before Katrina, about a million people drove out of the area on interstate highways as authorities converted all lanes coming toward New Orleans into outbound traffic. But many of the city's poor either had no transportation or couldn't afford to leave.
The storm killed more than 1,300 people in Louisiana and Mississippi, with most of the deaths occurring in New Orleans, the largest city in the area. Sadly, the local authorities in New Orleans ignored the warnings and failed to evacuate their poorest people. Other cities along the coast successfully evaucated and the majority of people were able to flee New Orleans on their own, but the failure of the mayor of New Orleans to mobilize school busses for people without cars and his failure to send the police and firemen around to be sure people were actually gone and to help with evacuating those who couldn't get out resulted in many people being stuck in the city after it was hit by Katrina and flooded.
The low death toll from the dangerous California fires is a testament to the hard work being done by Californians to look out for one-another, and the value of getting people evacuated and away from danger rather then leaving them alone in harm's way as occurred during Katrina. The police and Sheriffs (Yea Jato!) and fire people are doing a fantastic job alerting people and going through the evacuated areas to be sure everyone is out, and the citizens (YEAH PMS) and businesses are pitching in, and hospitals etc. are being evacuated so that sick or poor people aren't carelessly left behind in the evaucated areas. HUZZAH for California!
