$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('highlander', '1')3:00 PST and it's 77.36. Where is the bottom?

Wait for the government and trade deficits to shrink to zero. Then the dollar will have some strength.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('WhatMeWorry', 'B')eing a fairly financial dullard with a 401k what are my options as the dollar continues to plummet? The market keeps reaching for the stars but I feel the impending collapse approaching. Here I am with one foot in each world...the present and post peak. I feel like I'm watching a train wreck in slow motion.

Emigrate?

If you work on the assumption that "the dollar continues to plummet", you must accept that your purchasing power is diminishing (by the way, with a time lag) and you are becoming poorer. It doesn't matter how much money you make if you cannot keep up with the devaluation. You can get financial advice on all sorts of possibilities, but a currency collapse means poverty for most people. It can destroy a country for a time.

So with net foreign selling of treasuries the question is, "who was buying?", especially since yields FELL during that interval:

So perhaps someone could explain to me why the U.S. Treasury complex rallied like a bad thing in the month of August?

You see folks, I have a memory.

I recall quite vividly that the “line from officialdom” and widely reported in the main-stream-financial –press, was that August's rally in Treasury Yields was all about a ‘supposed flight to quality'.

It now seems that we were all sold a ‘bill of goods'.

The current "Forbes" magazine contains an interview with a currency trader who is advising his clients that now is the time to buy dollars and sell Euros. The dollar is low, and he is old-fashioned enough to believe in a "buy low-sell high" approach to investing. 8)

As I understand it (my knowledge is quite informal), you might see some commodities take a quick drop when the Yen strengthens, as the carry trade unwinds a little and commodities get sold to meet margin calls. This is often viewed as an indicator that someone is in pain.

I'm sure the world's central bankers have a few surprises up their sleeves, they are resourceful people. But in the long term, the dollar will keep declining. I picture it this way: the US has too much debt to maintain its purchasing power. The reality is complex, but that makes a lot of sense to me.

Maybe there will be a little breather, so we can do something with our meagre retirement savings. It would be nice. I am not too optimistic about retirement any more. I guess we just have to live one day at a time...

Congratulations, you just got a raise in terms of gold and silver. Are they whacking the markets pre-Fed meeting, or is this more credit crunch selling?

It looks like we've bounced and are back at 78 at this point. Gold down $15 so far.

Dead cat bounce.

Buy dips.

Gold $1000 before year end (low side).

Silver $20

There are always periods of flucuations in the market, one little bounce is not indicitive of where the market is actually going.

Don't worry, I promise that we are not heading back to a booming economy. The doomers are safe for the moment.
