$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('greenworm', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'G')ive me a link, I will put you in your place for him.

Umm, that would be in the much acclaimed 911 thread, mr. expert.

You act like there is only one 911 thread. I am not going to sift through those threads to find you "dissertation".

Like I said, give me a link and I will pull your punk card.

No Phd. About to go back for my MBA though.

I have a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering; work in the power generation industry; served in the Marine Corps for 4 years as a combat engineer, and I have conducted explosive demolition and landmine training courses for soldiers from all over the world.

What about you?

I’d really like to see your dissertation.

phd structural engineering (special focus on material properties under duress, heat, friction, load, interesting, but I learned more with my first engineering job)
ma computer science (special focus on build optimization, which was a good career choice, but boring as hell)
ba sociology (special focus on small group polarity, these php threads do fascinate me, boy do they ever.)
ba justice studies (I just needed a couple of classes because of my soc degree, so why not, civil liberties was interesting, I even sited a precedent to a cop once)
minor psychology (why bother)
Almost a minor in philosophy, but I was 4 credits short and got sick of school. (good choice not to finish)

I worked for the leading finite element analysis software company in build/release, QA, performance testing.
Tons of programming jobs, mostly contract, some dealing with the engineering field, some not.

What can I say, I had a lot of free time.

Now, I am leading authoritarian on the Nipmuc Nation, that is actually a misnomer since they are not recognized, but this is more due to gov't spending and where the money flows for the oh so precious casinos. Spent the last year and half excavating sites along northeast Connecticut. Want to see pictures of the last one I uncovered, it's raining here, but wtf, if your game, I'm game.

There you go, there's me.

Bloody hell. All those qualifications and you ended up in the career graveyard that is the QA department. You were wise to get out

I was the QA department/Product management/Performance department. The mission statement of the company we provide the correct solutions, and we took it seriously, that is why they are #1.

I retired at age 34, I think I did ok, you still working?

It's still QA though! I'm sure it's fun when you get into it.

I've retired to my rural PO-proof compound, but still do a bit of work as the money's too good to resist. I do hate IT with a vengeance though. Twenty years is enough to drive you bonkers.

Registered? DO you mean am I a PE?

No, I live in Pennsylvania and planned to move to Florida after I saved soem money so registering for the EIT an PE exams after collage was not a priority after graduation since they would be worthless if I moved.

Got a job, got married and still am in PA (ain't that the way life goes?) but I think the ship has sailed as far as getting my PE is concerned. It's best to take the EIT right out of school and then the PE as soon as you put in the time, it's just too much to re-learn after a few years goes by. Anyways, most of the engineers at the plants are not PE’s; you don't need a stamp because most of the work that would require one is contracted out. If you want to work as a consultant or something, you really need it. I plan on moving towards the business end, hence the pursuit of an MBA instead.

Seems like a lot of time in school and you retired at the age of 34 so you can't have that much experience right?

Anyways, I didn't see anything about demolitions on your stats, have you ever seen what an explosion looks like live? Have you ever seen what a steel beam looks like after it has been blown?

If you are a structural engineer, then you know that a building wants to come down, the key is to remove the stops. The CT about the building being blown up is far too involved than need be for the task at hand.

I would still like to see you dissertation.

IT doesn't pay man, I'd get out of that. Plus, it is boring as hell, the QA job was the most challenging, just because it was in it's infancy. When I arrived, there was literally no tools to monitor the regression testing, I got to write everything from the ground up, perl rules!!! The tools that ran the jobs were horrible, I took 20,000 lines of code and turned it into roughly 700. Performance was also cool, I found a bug in linux opteron, which is my claim to fame. IT is babysitting machines, not really my thing, man. Doesn't require much innovation. Not my style.

We've already had this discussion. I am sorry this thread is about experts, I am partly to blame for the tangent we have taken.

Introducing 'EXPERTS' (horns!!,horns!!,horns!!,horns!!,horns!!)

Let us discuss, what it is that makes an expert here at po.com.

ADD must be a byproduct of the air.

As you know registration (read: title) means everything in the engineering field...

Why did you not make getting registered a priority?

Actually it does not mean everything, it only means that you have the ability to sign off on drawings and possibly be held accountable for failures. (PE's that sign drawings must carry insurrance, another reason many opt out) If you are applying for a job that does not require drawing stamps, like I have, it means nothing. An MBA means much more.

Like I said, I failed to make it a top priority only because I was going to move and that would have voided my license, I planned on doing it after the move. Never happened. Not the ends of the world, most engineers are not PE's. I tell every young engineer that I meet to make sure that they take the exam just incase they end up pursuing a job that requires it.

It can't hurt, only help. We all have regrets, but that does not mean that a PE has any more knowledge than any other engineer, only that they passed one more test. And as we all know, a lot of those guys that set the curve in engineering school make horrible engineers! Many go back to school to teach because they cannot do. I would trust an engineer who has been practicing for a decade over a PhD. holder with only a few years of experience any day.

I may try to take it though, it’s a possibility.
